How to remove old veneer from old furniture?
I asked this question at the moment when I decided to restore an old chest of drawers from the garage. Next, I tell you how I got out of the situation and removed the veneer so as not to spoil the base.
Here is the dresser itself. Made of wood and covered with varnished veneer.
On the countertop, the situation was the worst. In some places the veneer was swollen and peeled off, in some places it was completely wiped off to the wood, and in some places it held as if it had just been glued.
I needed to clear the veneer off the dresser. I coped with the ends and chuhlyadki easily with a spatula. From the countertop itself, I removed everything that was already falling off with a spatula, then sanded it well.
The photo shows that there is a veneer on the tabletop, which was kept "dead" and it is no longer possible to remove it with a spatula. Leaving it as it is is also not an option.
Good glue was in those days, and they made furniture conscientiously.
The solution was prompted by the Internet. I climbed into YouTube with this question and came across a video where the veneer was removed by wetting it, and then dried with a construction hairdryer and the veneer peeled off itself. But I don't have a hair dryer and I took a different path.
We take gloves and an old spatula. Do not sharpen the spatula too much, otherwise it will scratch the wooden base itself, but we do not need this.
Then I take plain water and moisten the remains of the veneer with a sponge, letting the moisture soak well. No wonder I polished and removed the varnish. Then he took an old towel, wet it and twisted it so that it was wet but not dripping from it. We put a towel on the old veneer and heat it up with an iron at the maximum temperature.
Do not dry completely, but only heat. Then we take a spatula and "hot" veneer is removed perfectly. If you let it cool, then the veneer is removed poorly. It's important to shoot when it's still hot.
The result was perfect, exactly what I wanted.
Of course, the errors on the table top remained. Cover with wood putty and clean. Next, remove the dust, degrease the surface and paint.
I painted it in two layers with acrylic paint, it looked perfect. But after a couple of days in daylight, painting errors became clearly visible)))
I painted it with a third layer and everything became beautiful. Here is such a simple technique for removing old veneer. Try it if anyone needs it.
On this I say goodbye, all peace and kindness))
