How I brew rose hips in a thermos
Not far from my house, there are thickets of wild rose or rose hips. By the fall, red berries ripen in place of fragrant flowers. You can eat them raw, but very carefully so as not to accidentally swallow the seeds with ruffled tips. The throat will persist for a long time.
I pick the berries myself, cook a delicious compote from them for the winter. I also dry the fruits in order to prepare a useful infusion in winter. When properly prepared, all vitamins and nutrients are preserved in the drink.
I will try to tell you how to properly brew rose hips in a thermos.
Vitamins need to be preserved
It should be noted that dried fruits contain no less useful properties than raw berries. They are concentrated in them. When storing dried berries, special conditions must be observed:
- the room must be dry with good air circulation;
- for storage, you can use a canvas bag or a glass container with a lid, I prefer a jar - it is more convenient.
I used to think that rose hips can be stored for years if the conditions are met. But then I found out that they lose most of the useful properties after 1.5 years. Now I do harvesting every year in such quantity that I need.
How to brew
I used to boil berries in a regular jar and cover with a lid. Then I found out that using a thermos is a little more convenient. I specially bought a small vessel for brewing various berries and herbs.
I wash the berries and put them in a thermos. If the infusion is prepared for one person, then two tablespoons of dried fruits and 500 ml of boiled water are enough.
Before, I made the mistake of destroying the main component of berries - vitamin C. I poured boiling water over the rose hips. Only acids and some fructose remained in the drink. Now I specially prepare water, from the moment of boiling to pouring it should take at least 10 minutes.
After the hot water enters the thermos, close it and let it brew. All nutrients will be transferred to the water after 12, at least 7 hours. Therefore, I brew rosehip berries in the evening in order to enjoy a vitamin drink in the morning.
In the morning I filter the infusion through a fine strainer. You need to drink it about 30 minutes before a meal. Then you can drink another glass in the late afternoon. Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator.
Some recipes recommend adding honey or sugar to enhance the taste. I never do that. If you like, then you can sweeten it already in the cup.
