Why legs cramp at night, and how to deal with it
I encountered cramps in my legs not so long ago. One had only to go to bed, as a cutting pain appeared in the lower extremities. I decided to find out what could be the reason. Among the large list, in addition to an uncomfortable posture in a dream, diseases (varicose veins, diabetes) and a lack of magnesium were also indicated.
I decided to see a therapist. I had to take several tests. Then I was prescribed an examination by a phlebologist, neurologist and endocrinologist. Fortunately, no varicose veins, no diabetes, or other serious causes were found in me. The doctor advised not to overcool and not to load the legs.
I didn't stop there and decided to find more information to keep up to date. It has been found that nocturnal cramps in the nocturnal limbs can signal the onset of diabetes or magnesium deficiency.
Most often, there is not enough magnesium in the body of pregnant women, during stress. Even some medications remove this trace element from the body, just like protein diets.
I wondered if there was any way to make up for the lack of magnesium in the body. I found out that not only vitamin preparations are needed for this. Basil, coriander, dill, basil in every 100 g contains a double norm of this substance. It is useful to diversify the diet with avocados, beans, lentils, dark bitter chocolate.
Magnesium is essential for our body to absorb calcium, it has a beneficial effect on human brain activity.
Now, here are some helpful tips:
- As soon as the leg cramps begin, you need to lean on the heel and start massaging the area where muscle tension has arisen. To consolidate the effect, it is advisable to bandage the leg with an elastic bandage, from the foot to the knee.
- Every morning, you need to do a few exercises that your doctor recommends.
- You should not wear high-heeled shoes during all working hours. If the dress code provides for this, it is better to think about changing jobs.
- Before going to bed, you need to do contrast baths, massage your legs, and sleep better in woolen socks.
I try to follow the recommendations mentioned above. Recently, the convulsions have practically disappeared. But I constantly go to my doctor for a consultation. I would hate the more serious consequences of night cramps in my legs.
