Black currants will give a bountiful harvest of large berries if necessary measures are taken with the bushes in the spring. I share my experience
After winter, black currants need careful maintenance. What activities should be done with bushes in early spring?
Spring activities with black currants
It is necessary to carry out the following activities in the spring.
Harvesting mulch
If in the fall you have poured mulch in the form of sawdust, manure, compost or fallen leaves into the near-trunk circle, then it must be carefully removed from its place.
Pruning
In the spring, the bush must be examined, dry, old, sick-looking, damaged branches must be removed. If the plant is weakened, then pests and diseases will quickly attack it. As a result of pruning, the bush will thin out, the branches will be better illuminated, which will have a good effect on increasing yields. Up to 15-20 powerful shoots should remain on the bush.
Pests
If, when cutting branches, the core is dark in color, then the glass pest has worked. Shoots need to be cut until visible damage disappears. In this case, all trimmings must be burned.
If the plant is affected by a kidney mite, then the buds will acquire a spherical shape instead of oblong. Therefore, before the leaves bloom, they must be collected and disposed of, because a tick has settled inside.
From ants and aphid infestation, the bushes should be treated with insecticides in the phase of the beginning of leaf blooming. For example, you can use the biological product "Aktofit" for these purposes.
How to feed
In the spring, in April, the currants must be fed to obtain a bountiful harvest, when the buds are swollen and ready to bloom. At this time, you need to use nitrogen fertilizers so that the plant builds up a powerful green mass.
All subsequent dressings (2-3 more) should be complex, including potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. Of the nitrogenous mineral fertilizers, urea is considered the most famous. It is brought in 20-40 grams for each bush.
From organic matter in the spring, bird droppings and manure are suitable for currants. A bucket of diluted fertilizer is poured onto the bush at the rate of 1 to 12.
Currants can be fed with bread crusts, which are infused in a 5 or 10 liter bucket for 10 days in a warm place. Then the infusion is diluted in a ratio of 1 to 3.
