Finnish way of heating a country house if you live in it only on weekends

How to choose a heating method so that it is convenient on the one hand and inexpensive on the other? We will not touch upon the option when there is main gas. For example, in Finland there is no such possibility of heating country houses, and the climate is rather harsh, as in many regions of Russia. And there, many have developed an optimal approach to heating.

In Russian regions (where there is no gas), as a rule, the most inexpensive heating method is chosen: wood or coal. Convenience is relegated to the background. More and more examples of installing a heat pump (HP) and heating with electricity are 2-3 times cheaper (it turns out almost like gas). But in Siberia, air-to-air or air-to-water heat pumps may not work for several months due to frost. And the geothermal one is too expensive. How to be? Let's look at the experience of the Finns.

They use a combined heating method. They put a wood-burning stove. They usually have Tulikivi or Nanouni brands of soapstone (steatite). The ovens look nice:

No fireplaces - just an energy-intensive stove with a glass door. The principle is the accumulation of heat by the material of the stove, which it gives off within about 12 hours after heating. As in Russian villages. The fireplace, on the other hand, works only when wood is burning in it. The firewood in it burned out - it became cold.

So, the Finns, if in winter they do not live in a country house for a week, they leave the electric convectors turned on. But not at all power to maintain +22 gr., But only at + 5... + 7 gr. With the help of thermostats. And when they come for the weekend, they immediately heat the wood-burning stove to a comfortable 22 gr. or higher. Due to the increased heat transfer of the stove, the house heats up quickly. The stove is installed in such a way that it heats the rooms as efficiently as possible and warm air rises to the second floor. Their houses are small: from 70 to 120 m2.

What does maintenance give + 5... + 7 gr. in home? Savings, of course. Reducing the temperature of the energy carrier by 1 gr. saves 5-6% heating costs. Those. You will save at least 75% the cost of electricity compared to the option to maintain in the house +22 gr. Moreover, the convectors will only turn on by Tuesday. For more than a day, the house will cool down to +5 gr.

Warm up the house from +5 to +22 degrees. always faster than freezing temperatures. But the most important thing is that you do not need to drain the water from the water supply system. You will not get freezing of the walls - frost and ice can destroy plaster, wallpaper. Moisture condensation in the corners will cause mold to form. The latter is not so scary for the Finns, because all their houses have forced ventilation and recuperators.

The cost of electricity in Finland: from 0.06 to 0.15 Euro / kW (depending on the supplier) and has been decreasing in recent years. So, at the beginning of 2020, the cost of a megawatt-hour was about 27 euros. In January 2019, it exceeded 55 euros.

Why not put a solid fuel boiler, or even better - an automatic boiler? Consider it expensive. This requires approval. Pellets are very expensive - up to 250 euro / ton. The installation itself, the piping of the system is also an expensive pleasure. And their firewood costs a maximum of 50 Euro / m3 (birch). Pine is cheaper.

For them, the aesthetics of a fireplace stove with a glass door are also important. It is more pleasant to heat it than a boiler in a furnace. You can sit by the stove admiring the fire. And it is easier to service it.

This method is also associated with the fact that the Finns will not be allowed to heat the house with electricity alone - you will not be registered in a house with such a heating system. They buy electricity from Russia and generate it at wind farms. Those. it is customary to save electricity there.

With such a system, the costs for the heating season for a house with an area of 100 m2 are obtained within 10000 kWh electricity and 4-6 m3 of firewood in 8 months. With a permanent residence, the cost of firewood increases, but the consumption of electricity decreases. And the total costs remain the same.
