There was a crackling sound in the new house. The builders opened the ceiling - it turned out to be bark beetles. How to get them out?
More than once I heard about cases when in a new house at night (and during the day too) the owners hear some kind of crackling from the wooden floors. Its reason is not immediately clear. But knowledgeable people quickly determine what it is from. This is not wood shrinkage. The sound source is bark beetles.
Here's a recent example:
New house made of aerated concrete, but with wood trim attic floor. The owners found a constant crackling sound behind the cladding. Its partial dismantling showed that there are wooden elements with bark. The builders did not remove the wane from the boards and bars (low quality lumber). And this is a gross mistake. In such elements, grinder beetles lay larvae. And those in a short period of time can even destroy the tree like termites.
The tree was also not treated with a bio-composition against such insects, or it was initially infected with a bark beetle. Usually, only fire protection of beams and rafters is done. Here the owners of the house had to dismantle all the cladding from the lining, inspect and clean and handle the elements. Moreover, removing the bark may not help. The larvae also penetrate the tree itself and gnaw through the passages in it.
It happens that the wood in the house bursts in severe frosts (-30 and below). But this is due to the drop in moisture and the formation of cracks in the tree.
If the builders who are building your house themselves choose from which board to make the floors, then avoid non-edged boards, control it.
Removing wane from the boards is a long and painstaking business. The builders themselves will not do this, and if they do, there is a risk that the crust will remain. If such boards are still used, then after removing the bark, they must be processed by immersion in the Antizhuk product. There are many brands on sale.
If the boards were lying with bark, then a bark beetle was definitely wound up in them. If you already had a finish, then dismantling the gypsum board or lining will be required. And then - the search for boards with wane and their dismantling, processing or replacement.
Folk remedies for processing are widespread: a mixture of turpentine and kerosene (3 to 1), carbolic resin and naphthalene, liquid paraffin, hot drying oil.
There are more radical methods like the microwave method using a microwave:
Larvae do not survive when heated above 60 gr. And microwave waves heat everything where there is water. The wood heats up over 20 minutes to 50-60 gr., charring will not occur. And the larvae will definitely cook during this time. But you need to turn on the open microwave oven remotely and so that no one is in the house, even the flowers must be removed from the premises.
This is a long step-by-step process of processing beams or ceilings using the microwave method. If a couple of larvae survive, the process of their sabotage will continue.
Another radical method is the treatment of the room with smoke sulfur compounds. But they will only help to remove pests from the surface of the tree. If the larvae are inside, the method will not help. Yes, and after processing, the room will still be radiated with chemistry for a long time and it will be harmful to health. At least a week will have to live in another place and ventilate the room.
Another common method is fumigation with phosphine. This is phosphorous hydrogen (PH3) - a colorless and odorless poisonous gas (1st hazard class):
To generate this gas, magnesium or aluminum phosphide is used. Upon contact with water or sludge, water vapor - phosphine is released.
Processing can only be done by sanitary services that process basements, granaries. It is dangerous to do it on your own. Experts put the tablets of this substance in the room into 5-7 days. The gas emitted by them performs disinfection. Gas penetrates everywhere. They are processed in the warm season. Phosphine is 1.5 times heavier than air, and when it goes down, it penetrates into all passages of bark beetles. Those. it is necessary to lay out phosphine on all floors.
They write that this is the most effective method to get rid of the bark beetle without dismantling the wooden elements. Other insects will also disappear. But after processing, you need to ventilate the premises for a long time and measure the MPC of this gas.
