A nail instead of an electrode: is it possible to weld metal like this? We answer the question

Imagine the situation: you urgently need to weld something or just grab it, but there are no electrodes at hand and there is nowhere to buy them at the moment. Once in a lifetime, this happens! What to do in this case? Take a nail and boil it! Such an experiment was conducted by the author of the YouTube channel "Do it yourself". Now we will tell you about it.

What is a welding electrode?

The electrode is a metal rod coated with a special compound. The electrode coating is necessary for stable arc burning and protection of the metal from air - the rod should not oxidize. The rod itself is the welding wire. In some situations, it can be replaced with steel wire.

You can use a steel nail instead of an electrode, but this will turn out not quite welding, but a kind of surfacing. As such, there will be no penetration of metal surfaces, but this mount is capable of holding, and very well!

What happened in practice

• Two corners were used for the experiment, and a fiftieth nail was used as an electrode. This product corresponds in thickness to the "five" electrode.

• The current of the welding machine was set to 25 amperes more than when welding with a conventional electrode with a diameter of 4 mm.
• When the electrode-nail came into contact with the metal, a slight adhesion occurred, but after the second attempt, the arc was caught.
• As a result, the seam lay down and the corners firmly grabbed each other. The connection turned out to be quite strong, in some places the metal was even welded quite well.

The experiment showed that a nail can act as a temporary measure if you need to grab something urgently and reliably. The initiator of the experiment assures: "If you get used to it, you can weld a pipe under pressure with a nail so that it won't leak!"

By the way, there are people who put a seam with an electrode no better than a professional with a nail! So if you feel like it, use it!
