Tips from florists: why petunia seedlings disappear. Errors warned about by experienced professionals
Why does petunia disappear at the germination stage, without having time to develop normally?
Most often, seedlings are destroyed by a fungal disease, like a black leg. But this disease is not always the reason for the wilting of seedlings.
What do experienced petunia care specialists warn and teach?
Mistakes that inexperienced growers make
Many novice florists have problems growing petunias. When sowing seeds, seedlings may not appear due to a number of reasons. This is the poor quality of the seed, as well as the wrong sowing technology, high soil moisture.
In addition, petunia seeds are often sold in granules, several pieces per package. It is necessary to ensure that these granules have time to dissolve normally. A toothpick (mechanical method) or a spray bottle can help in this. The latter need to spray the soil until the granules dissolve.
The appearance of a black leg on petunia shoots
The black leg cannot come out of nowhere. If the soil has not been disinfected before sowing, then the spores are perfectly preserved in the soil substrate (especially in wet). Under favorable conditions (humid and cool), they actively manifest themselves.
Seedlings can be harmed by elementary soil overflow. Seedlings will not survive in this case, even with good lighting and sufficient heat. But seedlings can suffer with a lack of moisture. Therefore, you need to adhere to the golden mean, moisturizing young shoots.
Reception from a stretched petunia
With good lighting and nutrition, the seedlings are still pulled out. Therefore, it is better to spud it with a toothpick or skewer (as if sinking the sprouts into the ground, that is, pressing the soil next to the seedlings from different sides). This action will also close the bare plant roots. The work must be carried out carefully so as not to damage the delicate seedlings.
You can also add river sand (calcined) to the seedlings. This action will protect against the appearance of a black leg. River sand can be replaced with fine vermiculite.
As soon as petunia shoots have appeared, the lid of the container with plants should be slightly opened so that there is no excessive condensation in the container. That is, the container does not need to be tightly closed. Young petunias should gradually get used to the ambient air temperature.
With waterlogging of the soil, hilling and loosening will quickly rid the soil of excess moisture. Drainage holes must be made at the bottom of the container if they are not there.
If you follow the above rules, then you have every chance to save your petunia and grow beautiful flowers.
