Tips for the florist: what to do so that the marigolds rise quickly and amicably (with a brush). I share my experience
Every year I plant marigolds because I love these flowers. They not only decorate the estate, but are also used for culinary and medicinal purposes. I dry marigold petals (red varieties are better) and use them as a fragrant seasoning for meat dishes.
Tagetes (another name for marigolds) grows well in open ground, pots, flower boxes, containers. Gardeners often plant these plants in the beds to repel harmful insects.
For example, I have them growing between cabbage heads to protect against cabbage butterflies. They cannot stand the strong scent of tagetes flowers.
When and where to sow seedlings
In open ground, tagetes are sown after 1.5-2 months with the emergence of shoots. If you sow seeds for seedlings in April, then in June the marigolds will bloom. I sow tagetes in the spring in a wide container, for example, I take the lid from under the cake, which I fill with earth and sow seeds there.
With warming, in April-May I take out the container with seedlings in the greenhouse, where the plants continue to develop until they are planted in the ground.
In the fall, I collect my own seeds from the bushes, when the seed pods on the plants are completely dry.
How to sow
In a container (boxes, containers, cake lids), fill in fertile soil (purchased soil or soil with garden), which I mix with calcined sand and a pinch of ash) and from above I moisten the soil from spray bottle.
Then I randomly scatter the seeds in a container.
Sprinkle the seeds with the same soil to a depth of no more than 1 cm. Next, I spray the crops from a spray bottle.
Cover with glass or foil to create heat and condensation.
I put the container in a warm place with a temperature of + 25- + 26 degrees. After 3-4 days, I have friendly shoots. After that, I lower the ambient temperature to + 18- + 17 degrees so that the marigolds develop normally.
In May, I plant seedlings in open ground.
