It seems to me that many summer residents have a question with a water barrel - a very urgent question. And I decided to write my useful tips.

On the site, different summer residents do not always have plastic barrels. Many people sometimes send an old bathtub instead of a landfill to a dacha to store water in it. It's just that many keep the dacha not from wealth, but for the sake of economy.

For me, my dacha is my mother's house in the village, where she actually lives. I somehow went broke for a good plastic barrel because the old rusty barrel was completely emaciated, and it was no longer possible to store water in it. The bottom cracked from corroding rust.

Mom boasted to the neighbors that now the site is beautiful and the barrel is new! Pulled off at night. And they didn't leave a note, as they say... And you need to water cucumbers, tomatoes and others with infused water, not from the tap. What was left to do? In the heat, you can't store buckets for water. The garden is big! Without a barrel in any way.

It's good that we didn't have time to throw out the old rusty one. Here she has served the whole season ...

We folded a soft foam pillow at the bottom and pulled on a strong bag, which is designed for large debris. The water held well in it, but the bag is also not eternal, as you understand. Therefore, I propose to think about not buying plastic barrels, but protecting the old, still intact, metal barrels.

If the metal is new, you can simply degrease and coat with a special compound to protect it from water. And if there is already rust, it is better to clean the rust thoroughly with special means, degrease and start applying.

There are several types of means for applying a protective layer. Our neighbors generally covered them with enamel paints with a thick layer. But such a layer did not last long, it seems, a couple of years in total, and then it is very difficult to clean it off from cracks and emerging rust in order to cover it again. It is better to take a closer look at the best compositions.

Can be covered with cement in two layers. The first is just cement, the second, after thorough drying for 6-10 days, repeat the same thing with the addition of liquid glass to it.

Some in our village have tried red lead, but also short-lived protection - barely enough for a year.

The best protective layer for barrels is obtained from bitumen. In addition, the barrel becomes heavy and it is more difficult to drag it away unnoticed. Therefore, we thought for the next season to buy a metal barrel and immediately fill it with bitumen and always keep it full of water.
