Mistakes of early planting of tomatoes: business time
Many gardeners complain that, having planted tomatoes in a greenhouse, they cannot get a harvest for a long time or even lose their "roots". The problem is early planting of tomatoes.
In late February - early March, all gardeners start planting tomatoes and peppers. We have already missed gardening, having rested in the winter months, and readily proceed to sowing. Our windowsills and other free areas are occupied by containers and numerous other containers for seedlings.
Tomatoes grow and the more sunlight penetrates the room, the stronger and longer they become. Therefore, with the onset of the first warm days, we cannot wait to quickly land them in the ground. But don't be in too much of a hurry. Everything has its time.
Better to let your seedlings live longer at home. Protect it from direct sunlight. If they are too elongated, pinch the top, this will slow down growth.
If all measures have been taken, and the gardening season says that it's time, I take my green friends to the country and act as follows:
- If the greenhouse is heated, then replanting can be done at the end of April. If it is polycarbonate - after the May holidays - May 10-15. In case the greenhouse is silted with polyethylene or non-woven material - mid-May.
- When transplanting tomato seedlings, the outside air temperature is very important. During the day, it should be at least + 18 C, and it should stand for 5-7 days for the air to warm up well. Night temperature - + 10 C.
If the weather forecast promises at least one day of frost, and you have already sent the seedlings to the greenhouse, you risk losing the "roots". Let you plant tomatoes a week later than usual, but keep it in full health.
- By moving the seedlings to the greenhouse, I let her "get used to" the new room. Leave in pots for a few days. They undergo acclimatization, get used to a new temperature regime for themselves. This, subsequently, will help the tomatoes take root better when transplanting.
- Pay attention to the age of the seedlings. Ideally, the bush should consist of 6-8 true leaves. The post must be strong and not fragile.
- If the cups are clear, pay attention to the root system. It should be well developed with good ramifications. The roots that look like strings will tell you that the seedlings can still "sit" in the pot.
- Before planting seedlings, treat the greenhouse well - wash it with a weak solution of manganese or other disinfectants.
Have a nice harvest!
