No dust and noise: how to cut a wave slate with a nail

Cutting slate with a grinder is another thing: a cloud of dust, fragments flying in all directions and the danger that the disc will bite. What is needed for this

Of the tools, only a hammer is useful. Any nail can be used as an improvised cutter: 70, 90 or 100 mm. A regular rail and a pencil or marker are suitable for marking. And you will also need any two identical boards so that when working, the slate sheet lies flat.

How to dissolve slate with a nail

First you need to mark a cutting line or, in this case, a break. Then put the tip of the nail head on this line and hit it lightly with a hammer. The blow should not be strong, but such that the head pierces the material, but does not damage it with the rod.

Such notches must be made along the entire fracture line with an interval of every centimeter.

The break line should turn into an intermittent groove. When this operation is completed, all that remains is to put a board on one side of the sheet along the break line, do not press down hard on it and pull the other edge of the sheet up. Simply put, gently break the slate sheet along the break line.

Unlike cutting with a grinder, the scrapping line will turn out to be not perfectly flat, but a little torn. But it is unlikely that on the roof or on the fence, someone will consider what the edges of the slate have turned out there. Who needs it?
