How to screw a self-tapping screw or hammer a nail into the edge of the board so that it does not burst: 3 ways
Often, with an L-shaped butt joint of boards with screws or nails, one of them cracks along the fibers. And this is logical, because the fasteners enter the very edge and burst the wood to the sides. By the way, resorting to the L-shaped connection of the boards with screws and nails is not entirely correct - it is better to use corners. But if you had to do this, then use some simple methods that will help preserve valuable building material.
The first method is for a screw / self-tapping screw
The most efficient and correct way to drive a screw / self-tapping screw into the edge of the board is with a pre-drilled hole. The hole diameter must be less than the fastener diameter. For example, if you need to screw a self-tapping screw on wood with a diameter of 3.5 mm, then a 2-2.5 mm drill should be used. When pre-drilling, the fasteners will go into the edge of the board and will not damage it.
The second method is for a screw / self-tapping screw
But in order to drill a preliminary hole, you need a drill, and it may not be at hand. In this case, ordinary pliers or wire cutters will help. At a self-tapping screw / screw, you just need to bite off the tip - literally 2 mm; and the fasteners will not damage the board. When using this method, it is imperative to lubricate the self-tapping screw / screw with soap, since without a tip it will be harder to screw in.
The third way is for nails
Nails stop splitting boards if they are simply blunt. To do this, it is enough to rest the hardware with a hat and hit the edge with a hammer. No matter how strange it may sound, but from a blunt nail in this case there is more sense. The fact is that a sharp nail, like a wedge, penetrates into the structure of the wood between the fibers and produces the corresponding effect - it delaminates / splits the board. A blunt nail squeezes and tears the fibers underneath, which does not lead to delamination.
