Band saw vs circular saw. Can one machine replace another
Greetings.
First, let's clarify what is Vs is an abbreviation for the Latin word Versusmeaning "against". One against the other.
Why can we talk about replacing one machine with another?
Everything is simple here. Both the band saw and the circular saw can perform the same operations and in some cases one machine can actually replace another.
Longitudinal sawing
What common.
You can cut the board lengthwise on either machine, but there are differences. For boards of small thickness, this is usually not difficult. But with a significant thickness or when dissolving the board into thinner ones, a difference arises.
Band-saw, in this case requires good setup. The thickness of the cut depends on the characteristics of the saw.
For a circular saw, the cutting thickness is limited by the diameter of the saw blade. This limitation is partially removed by cutting on the other side.
The surface after sawing in both cases requires additional processing. In my opinion, the surface is much cleaner after the circular saw.
Differences.
When cutting sheet materials, it is preferable a circular saw, because on it you can cut any size and it gives a cut much cleaner.
On the band saw impossible to do quarter or groove cut along the edge, and the circular saw makes this easy.
On the circular saw you can also choose a groove along the edge when setting the saw blade at an angle.
Cross cut
The ends of the workpieces can be cut on either machine. The cropping angle can also be adjusted. I have tried to cut corners for skirting boards, cornices, platbands. On both machines, these operations turned out to be done well.
Now for the differences.
Band-saw is limited by the frame and you will not be able to cut parts larger than the distance from the saw band to the frame.
On the circular saw there is no such limitation, and with the help of an angle stop or a slide, it is easy to cut workpieces of the required size.
Also, on a circular saw, you can make transverse blind grooves anywhere on the workpiece. With the help of a band saw, a similar operation can also be done, but this causes certain difficulties, the groove inside is not very clean, there are size restrictions from the saw frame and vertical from table.
Making thorns
With a circular saw and a band saw, you can make a finger joint in bars.
In this case, the circular saw has a limitation on the cutting depth. There is no such limitation for a band saw.
Curved sawing
This is the operation that band saw make it easy, and not circular is almost impossible.
With the help of a circular, cutting off in segments, you can get a semicircle or a circle, but you can no longer cut the inner curve.
But on a circular saw you can mill.
Outcomes
Of course, not all band and circular saw applications are covered here.
For a number of tasks, these machines can replace each other, for some tasks the replacement may be partial, and for some it is simply impossible.
