How necessary is a band saw in a home workshop. 7 years of operation.
Greetings.
Seven years ago I bought myself a band saw. It was a medium-sized saw. Maximum on it you can saw a thickness of 150 mm.
At the time of purchase, after reading woodworking magazines, I was eager to get such a machine in my workshop.
It seemed to me that the machine has so many capabilities that it can replace many tools in the workshop and will literally make it possible to sculpt from wood.
My hopes were largely justified, although there are enough limitations in the use of this machine.
During these seven years, the machine was actively used and did not stand idle. However, there were projects where the band saw was never turned on.
For the manufacture of curved parts, especially of considerable thickness, this machine will probably be irreplaceable.
When making such backs for chairs, the machine also helped save material.
Also, this machine did an excellent job of preparing the parts of this seat.
And in the manufacture of such legs, a band saw was indispensable.
Even with a band saw, you can cut even circles.
As for straight cuts, everything is not so simple here.
With a band saw, you can cut small logs into planks or cut thicker planks into thinner ones. This is a very good opportunity to save on materials.
At the same time, the thicker and harder the material, the more difficult it is to dissolve it smoothly. Here you need both a suitable belt and a tuned machine, otherwise you can only spoil the workpiece.
The surface after such dissolution turns out to be rather rough and requires additional processing.
But the use of this machine for facing is limited and primarily these restrictions relate to the distance from the frame of the machine to the saw band.
For the entire time I have this machine, it has mainly worked for three tasks.
The first - this is "big jigsaw" without deviation of the angle from the specified one with restrictions when cutting out internal contours. In the latter case, there will definitely be a cut into the inner contour, as, for example, in this box.
Second - This is a mini sawmill for breaking up thick boards or round timber.
AND third... since I live in a private house, and when working with wood, various wastes are generated, this machine makes it easy to cut them into firewood. For such tasks, I use saw blades, which are dull and it is already useless to sharpen them, but they still cope with the task of sawing firewood.
Of course, not all the tasks for which the band saw is useful are indicated here, but only what I most often used it for.
