What discs for a grinder should not be bought? Tips from personal experience

Friends, summer is not far off and soon many will go to their summer cottages. Not only the planting season, but also the construction season will begin. I want to share with you my experience, including negative, how not to be mistaken when choosing discs for wood for an angle grinder.

You ask - what does the Bulgarian and the tree have to do with it? My answer is that working with a circular saw on the roof or in the closet is inconvenient, so the grinder in this case is simply irreplaceable. The main thing is not to be mistaken with the choice of consumables and observe safety precautions!

What discs for a grinder should not be bought? Tips from personal experience

The toothed disk is ordinary - it is better not to take it!

In terms of the shape and number of teeth, a disc for a grinder is no different from a disc for a circular - there are 24-36 of them there and there. Only the discs for the grinder have a diameter specially for it - 115 or 125 mm. But it rotates at a speed of 11,000 per minute! Whereas a circular saw has 3,000 to 6,000 of them. Feel the difference.

I don’t want to remember how much I have endured working with this disc with my old boards and timber when repairing a roof in the country. The tree was gnarled, hard, and even with nails here and there. That and look, as if the recoil of the grinder itself did not hurt.

Of course, one can argue - but the discs are sold in stores. They also passed certification. Everything is correct, only they must be used on a grinder with an adjustable speed. Then it becomes less dangerous.

My neighbor has such a LBM - BORT BWS-1600-R . On it, the number of revolutions can be reduced from 11,000 to 3000 (!!!) per minute. And 3000 is like a circular saw. But if the grinder is ordinary, unregulated in terms of speed, then it is better to use other discs.

Chain discs are better, but also ...

I also tried discs with chains. Basically, I got a little chainsaw with all its merits and demerits. Yes, its design is safe enough. When the chain is jammed in the tree, it turns in the groove of the disc, which allows you to immediately turn off the grinder. And the number of revolutions on the grinder is about the same as that of a chainsaw.

Still, I didn't like working with the chain disc.

  • At first, the chain on the disc also needs to be sharpened, as on a chainsaw.
  • And secondly, in my head all the time the thought that the chain can break and hurt. Working with such a feeling is uncomfortable for me.

Coated discs are a good choice!

I liked the rims with tungsten carbide chips. Such a disc is no different from discs for angle grinders for concrete or stone, only designed for wood. By the way, not only for wood - it cuts plastic well.

The cut of the disc is thin, perfectly even, but it is impossible for them to make grooves. That is, there is a limitation on use.

The trident disc is just "candy"!

Great versatile drive. It can be used not only for wood, but also for chipboard, plastic and even metal. The disc has only three teeth on the circumference with carbide cutters. The small number of teeth compensates for the high rotation speed - this is equivalent to a decrease in the number of revolutions of the grinder several times.

The cutters of the disc are slightly thicker than the disc itself, so the wood does not burn during cutting and the disc does not clamp. Yes, they cost a little more, but safety and convenience are more important.

What kind of discs do you prefer to use? And why?
