5 Major mistakes when caring for a garden Petunia, because of which it grows stunted and may not bloom at all

Petunia is a beautiful and popular flower that is famous for its unpretentiousness. But this does not mean that she does not need attention and care. I have been growing garden petunias for many years, and from my own experience I was convinced what mistakes should be avoided.

Care errors

The following errors are often encountered:

1. Lack of light

Petunia is a sun-loving plant. Therefore, conditions are favorable for her when the duration of daylight hours is at least 12 hours.

Choose the sunniest areas for petunias, then it will delight you with lush and long flowering. When planting a plant in a shaded place, its growth period will be slow, flowers will form longer than usual.

During the growth of seedlings, be sure to turn the pot so that there is uniform access of light. Otherwise, the stems will grow twisted.

2. Lack of watering

I made sure that if there is a lack of moisture, the petunia leaves will turn yellow, and there will be no flowering. Therefore, pay attention to this, make sure that the soil is constantly moist to a depth of 2-3 cm.

I recommend using mulching. For this, colored decorative shavings or chips are suitable. This will help retain moisture and give the flower garden a decorative, attractive look.

3. Excess watering

Petunia does not like excessive moisture in the soil, especially if water gets on its leaves during watering. If water gets on the leaves and stems of a flower, it can cause sunburn and stem rot.

Also, with surface watering, the immune forces of the plant decrease and, accordingly, resistance to viruses.

4. Deficiency of "nutrition"

Plant your petunias in fertile soil. Fertilize (2-3 times) throughout the season. I recommend using special organic fertilizers. They are needed to ensure lush flowering.

The best time for the first feeding is 2-3 weeks before the buds appear. Feed the flowers throughout the summer. I use potassium monophosphate for feeding.

5. Keeping withered flowers

Remove wilted flowers in a timely manner. Firstly, it spoils the appearance of the plant. Second, and more importantly, the plant begins to form a seed capsule.

This consumes the strength of the plant and nutrients that could be used to form new buds.

Having avoided the above mistakes, petunia bushes will delight you with lush, beautiful flowering throughout the season.
