Rosatom will build a plant for the production of batteries for electric vehicles

State Corporation Rosatom, which is the operator of all nuclear power plants on the territory of the Russian Federation, plans to produce rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for cars and electric buses.

For these purposes, TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom, through its subsidiary Rena LLC, bought out 49% of the shares of such a company as Enertech International Inc (South Korea), which is a manufacturer of electrodes, battery cells, as well as energy storage systems of various capacities.

So one of the main points of this purchase is a prerequisite for Enertech construction on the territory of the Russian Federation of factories for the production of lithium-ion cells and energy storage systems with a total capacity of 2 GWh by 2030 year.

The launch of the first stage of production is scheduled for 2025. At the same time, lithium-ion batteries produced on the territory will be used in electric buses, electric cars, as well as in special equipment and in the power grid complex.

As a justification for this action, representatives of Rosatom stated that the company is striving to diversify its business, including through the development of "non-nuclear areas".

In addition, the creation of such a plant on Russian territory will be a significant event for our automotive industry. After all, this will lead to a significant reduction in dependence on imports, and may also turn out to be a significant driver for the development of electric transport in Russia.

Despite the fact that scientists around the world are actively looking for an alternative to lithium-ion batteries, they are increasingly in demand around the world. So according to the forecast of an authoritative publication Bloomberg, the annual demand for lithium will increase in the next decade at least 10 times and by 2031 it will already be more than 2 thousand GW * h (2 TW * h).

It should also be noted that the South Korean company was not chosen at random. After all, she is the manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for the Russian car Aurus.
