We compare plastic and metal gutters and cannot decide which one is better to buy
It's time for us to buy and install gutters on a new home. But we can't decide which system is better - plastic or metal. Both materials have pros and cons. Talking with acquaintances, they are generally confused. Those with a plastic gutter praise it. Those who have metal - recommend only the same.
Price
If we talk about cost, then the cheapest are PVC systems. Then there are zinc, metal-plastic and after them - titanium and copper. We don't even consider any other options besides PVC and metal-plastic. This is the most accessible segment that will not ruin us. They don't like zinc, purely outwardly, with all other things being equal.
Material
PVC, or plastic, is a high strength plastic containing vinyl and stabilizers.
The metal-plastic system is made of thin steel, which is galvanized and protected from above with a layer of polymer - purana. This structure gives them strength and excellent consumer properties.
Life time
Plastic drainage systems are designed for 10-15 years.
Metal-plastic has a service life that is designed for 50-60 years.
Resistant to corrosion and damage
Of course, the main advantage of plastic gutters, pipes and other elements of the drainage system is their resistance to corrosion. They are strong enough, but in the cold they become brittle, and under the pressure of a large mass of snow they can deform and break.
Another feature of plastic gutters is that they have the ability to expand when the temperature rises, and shrink when it decreases. Therefore, for assembly, special expansion joints and rubber seals are used. Their price is quite high, which negates the low cost of the system itself.
The metal-plastic system, when properly used, does not corrode, but if the plastic coating is damaged, then, of course, corrosion will begin. But it will not be as strong as for bare metal, since zinc plating also protects the steel.
Other disadvantages
In addition to fragility, the plastic system still does not "keep the color", it fade and looks ugly over time, disfiguring the structure.
Metal gutters make a lot of noise when it rains. In addition, you need to remember that they are quite heavy. Therefore, when building a house and installing a roof, you need to count on this load, which will fall on the fasteners and rafters.
Having weighed all the pros and cons, we decided to focus on a metal-plastic drainage system. It will completely match the color of the metal tile and will not differ. In addition, its service life is much longer.
