The staircase in the entrances always turns to the left! Have you noticed? Do you know why? There is a good reason for this!
The other day I was puzzled by the question - why do staircases always turn to the left, why do you need to hold onto the railing with your left hand when going up - is it inconvenient?! Okay, young people - they don't really care! But the elderly find it difficult to climb the stairs. And it would be much wiser and more comfortable when lifting with the right working hand.
These thoughts came up a few days ago. When, having arrived on a visit to a friend (and he lives in a 5-storey building without an elevator), I saw my grandmother, who needed to get to the 4th floor. Naturally, I saw her off and helped bring the purchases. But the "railings and stairs" suddenly stuck in my head. I had to think and read about it))
And in ancient times it was different!
It turns out that the location of the stairs was thought out even in the Middle Ages! It was an important moment! But then the stairs, on the contrary, turned to the right. In those days, towers and enclosing walls with narrow spiral staircases inside were often built. And all the time there was a risk of an attack on the castle. Enemies had to climb to the very top of the tower, fighting. In order to complicate the task for the enemies and provided for stairs with a turn to the right.
The fact is that the enemy warrior, going up and turning to the right, is forced to hold the weapon in his left hand. Not a very good position to fight! And for the warrior guarding the tower, on the contrary, the staircase leading to the right is a plus! Since going down, hold the weapon in your right hand and fight it more conveniently! That is why the stairs used to turn to the right!
But what happened next? What prevents you from doing the same in peacetime now?
Nowadays, in houses, stairs turn to the left, and the railings are located on the left when going up, just like the entrance doors must open outward. The reason for this is fire safety. Indeed, in the event of a fire, people need to leave the dangerous place as quickly as possible. And it is convenient to do this precisely along such a staircase, which turns to the right, and in which, when descending, the railing is located on the right side.
Such standards have appeared not so long ago. A little earlier, the stairs could turn in any direction - at least to the right, at least to the left. Please note that in new buildings you will not find stairs leading to the right when going up. And in old high-rise buildings - they are not uncommon! Probably, the designers were preparing for the attack of unknown tribes and the rescue of the residents of these houses!)
