How to Plate Steel with Copper at Home: Simple Electroplating
Electroplating is a technology of covering a metal with a thin layer of another metal. Examples: zinc plating, chrome plating, gilding and silver plating. The galvanizing process requires the use of special equipment and it is rather difficult to use it at home. We will tell you about a simple method of copper plating of steel, which is easily applicable in everyday life.
Where can this come in handy?
Electroplating is used not only for decorative purposes. For example, steel is copper for better electrical conductivity. Copper plating can build up metal in the places where it has worked out - this prolongs the life of the details. Using copper plating, you can push the bearing onto a worn shaft.
Copper friction coefficient is half that of steel. Copper plated taps and metal drills perform better. Another advantage of the copper layer on steel: high anti-corrosion properties - galvanization protects the tool from rust. In addition, the copper-plated tool is intrinsically safe.
And, of course, it is worth noting the high aesthetic component of the copper coating. Electroplating can refine even rough ferrous metal! Copper can be metal figurines, fasteners (bolts, nails, screws), lamps and their parts, door handles, hangers, photo frames, and more.
How to copper steel at home
For this procedure you will need:
- copper sulfate - sold at any hardware store;
- electrolyte and distilled water - in auto parts stores;
- degreaser - in hardware stores;
- kitchen scales and glass jar - should be in any home;
- tweezers, pliers, steel wire - they are not a shortage either;
- gloves, goggles, respirator - mandatory - do not come into contact with the solution, as well as inhale its vapors.
Prepare the solution only in a well-ventilated area!
To prepare a galvanizing solution, you first need to mix 100 grams of copper sulfate in 500 grams of distilled water. Stir thoroughly until the vitriol granules are completely dissolved. Next, add 100 grams of electrolyte to the solution and stir well as well. The solution is ready!
Metallic objects must be degreased before galvanizing. To do this, put them in a container with a degreaser for 30-60 seconds. Then take out and let dry completely. Then, using tweezers, pliers or wire, place the object in the solution for 5-15 seconds. The steel is almost instantly covered with a thin layer of copper. To thicken the copper layer, the procedure can be repeated 2-3 times.
