What brand of power tool to choose for a home workshop

click fraud protection

Greetings.

On the channel, I often talk about the instrument that I have in my workshop. And in the comments, there are almost always statements that this is a so-so instrument (read Chinese) and it is better to overpay and buy an instrument of a well-known brand (Festool, DEWALT or at least Makita, Bosch)

I am not such an adherent of branded tools, therefore I work with power tools of all kinds of brands.

Further in the gallery you can see almost the entire set of tools from my workshop of various brands.

All this instrument was bought gradually based on the possibilities at the time of purchase.

And the whole tool paid for itself completely. I did not lie idle. Something was used more often, something less often.

Of the power tools shown above, only two were repaired: the Diold milling cutter - replacing the cord and buttons, the Interskol plane - replacing the bearing and cord.

Of the not shown - the Makita belt sander after 8 years of intensive work was replaced by a Bosch belt, there was also an Interskol surface sander - it stopped work exactly after the end of the warranty period, and the Interskol wired screwdriver, after 5 years of intensive work, his gearbox was broken at 1 speed, at the second it continues work.

As for the machines. The first machine I got was a band saw, it has been serving for more than 7 years. Then he bought a planer-thicknessing machine Bison - it has been serving for 1.5 years. And a few more machines were purchased over the past year.

The machines were also purchased based on current capabilities. They fulfill their purpose successfully.

Only the band saw was repaired and this repair involved the tensioning and positioning units of the saw blade.

The machines have already paid for themselves. Even the "youngest" machine in my workshop, the jigsaw, paid for itself.

Before buying a tool, I usually research many different models and read reviews of the tool carefully.

Interestingly, in the last two years I have noticed the following picture: negative reviews, and on the contrary, more and more positive ones appear on the Chinese instrument of not very famous brands reviews.

As a summary

This is purely my personal opinion.

First, I think that recently the Chinese instrument of less popular brands has grown significantly in quality, and at the same time, well-known brands have somewhat lost their quality.

Second, in a home workshop, the requirements for the "endurance" of the instrument can be underestimated by compared to intensive production, where they try to squeeze out 200% of the tools and workers productivity.

The instrument is acquired as personal property based on one's own capabilities, it is treated more carefully and in the home workshop it is still less loaded than in production.

Third, for me there is one brand of instrument - working - one that can normally fulfill its purpose.

As for an expensive branded tool, if a person can afford to buy one, then that's great. Again, it is nice to feel like the owner of a high-quality valuable thing, which, on occasion, you can boast to your friends.

What do you think? Do you definitely need to acquire an expensive tool for your hobby, or do you still need to make different things out of wood with the tool that you managed to acquire?

Thanks for reading. I would be glad to have your support in the form of a like and a subscription to the channel. And see other publications on the channel.
