Destructive power: what trees are best not to plant next to the house
Before planning your garden, you need to know exactly which trees are potentially dangerous to buildings. The wrong choice can turn into a serious problem within 5-10 years. Read on to find out which plants are unwanted neighbors for your home and other buildings.
What can a tree
Many trees have a root system so powerful that it can easily lift the concrete foundation and crush the stone base. Doubt? Then look at the grass that makes its way through the asphalt... And the tree is hundreds of times larger and stronger than this unfortunate blade of grass!
Another important factor is the crown. More precisely, dry branches that can fall from it and damage the roof, power line, car. But what can we say - a weighty branch flying from a height of several meters is a direct threat to human life.
Potentially dangerous trees
- Do not plant ash near buildings. The tree grows very quickly; has a powerful root system that can lift the whole house. Ash wood is not inferior in strength to oak.
- Linden is also an undesirable building neighbor. The root system of this tree is developing rapidly and during the first two years it is gaining in volume up to three cubic meters.
- Poplar is dangerous not only with its branched root system, which can take up a radius of up to 20 meters, but also with loose wood. In a strong wind, poplar branches most often break and fall.
- Bird cherry also boasts spreading roots. The radius of the "defeat" of the root system of this tree is smaller than that of poplar - only up to 12 meters, but at the same time it is no less destructive for foundations and plinths.
- The list of trees with an extensive root system also includes: larch, beech, elm, birch, chestnut and maple. These species can be safely added to the list of trees undesirable for the local area.
- Maple, among other things, is a very "gluttonous" plant. Within the radius of action of its root system, it pumps out all the nutrients, forcing other plants to "starve".
If you are going to set up a garden close to a house or other buildings - consider all the listed species. If you even want to include something from the list in the landscape design, then try to maintain a safe distance.
