How I beat phytophthora in a greenhouse: a simple but very effective way
The harvest of tomatoes and the labor invested in them can easily destroy late blight. How to make this fungal disease forget the way to your greenhouse - read on. A member of our portal, Maria, shares useful advice.
First, about the phytophthora itself
"Disastrous, destroying, destroying plants" - this is how the name of this disease is translated from Greek. And these are very precise definitions. When we just bought the dacha, late blight practically destroyed the tomato and potatoes; the eggplants and zucchini also got it well.
We did not even have time to understand what had happened - for a week, while we were absent from the country, all the bushes in the greenhouse were covered with rot; what was growing on the street was partially saved. It was very disappointing.
Phytophthora is a fungus that infects plants of the Solanaceae family. According to science: a mycelial organism, a lower fungus, a parasite of higher plants. Inhabits soil, roots and bushes of plants. It spreads rapidly, feels comfortable in high humidity and temperatures from 10 to 20 ° C.
In private gardens and greenhouses, this disease most often provokes excessive application of manure and nitrogen-containing fertilizers. An overdose of nitrogen weakens crops, reduces their immunity. As a result, late blight also captures plants. Parasitic fungi are everywhere and always. They are just waiting for the chance for the plant to weaken.
Advice. Feed the plants gently without over-feeding. Although manure is considered a natural fertilizer, you do not need to overdo it with it.
My way of preventing late blight in a greenhouse
The conversation is about a greenhouse, because comfortable conditions for the spread of the fungus are immediately created in it. Greenhouse plants for phytophthora are the most vulnerable.
The greenhouse room needs to be antiseptic. I do this using ordinary pharmaceutical iodine, which is sold in bottles. The vial with iodine must be hung on a nylon thread by the neck and the lid must be removed. For a greenhouse with an area of 15 sq. meters, I hang 3 vials of 25 ml.
Iodine solution contains alcohol and is therefore a volatile liquid. The alcohol solution evaporates, alcohol vapors release iodine particles into the air. So this chemical element, saving for plants, gets to the bushes and into the soil.
Iodine is a powerful antiseptic. Phytophthora is very afraid of it and does not affect plants with this treatment. For eight years, there have been no fungal parasites in our greenhouses.
Important!
- Start doing iodine prophylaxis in early spring.
- Make sure that the iodine solution is always in the bubbles. When it evaporates, top up or replace the bottle.
- Do not throw away the covers! When working in a greenhouse, seal the bubbles and ventilate the area if possible. This solution is not recommended for us to breathe.
