I thought drainage around the house would solve many problems. Why, after three years, does it seem useless to me?
I took care of the drainage system around my house even at the stage of building the foundation. But I didn't really think about how it would function (well, it drains water and okay). But this spring I started thinking ...
Friends, I am glad to welcome you. In my articles, I have said more than once that I do not like to mindlessly follow any construction instructions. I definitely need to understand what works and why it is needed at all.
But for some reason, there were no such problems with the drainage system.
An inclined pipe that drains water away from the base of the foundation. Everything is simple and clear...
But after watching this process for a couple of seasons, I realized that something was wrong here π€. To figure it out, you need to answer a few simple questions.
β What is the drainage supposed to do?
1. The main task is to divert excess water from the base of the foundation.
2. The second problem has to do with my basement ...
I have already written several articles on how I dealt with its spring flooding. In one of the comments, I was advised to eliminate not the consequences but the cause, that is, to minimize the flow of water to the basement.
And here are two options:
- Through drainage pipes, water flows into a drainage well, and from there it is pumped out of the site by a pump. It is a volatile system.
- In the second option, all through the same drainage pipes, the water flows out of the site by gravity. No volatility and unnecessary problems.
β And of course, as the smartest one, I decided to do everything according to the second option, but ...
β How, in the end, does the drainage work for me?
As a result, this "gravity system" only works for a few weeks a year, when the groundwater level is at a certain level ( I have it winter, and the end of spring).
- In summer, there is no water in the drainage at all.
- And in early spring, it turns out to be completely filled, along with a drainage ditch along the site, where everything should flow.
It turns out that at the very moment when drainage is most needed (flood period), it simply does not fulfill its tasks.
β How do I want to do it in the end?
In my opinion, a combined system would be ideal - this is when drainage is non-volatile in a "quiet" time, and a pump comes to the rescue in an "extreme" period.
To do this, you need to make small improvements.
- Connect a pump to the drainage system. Moreover, I want to do this through the revision well (I think there should be enough space).
F
- Install a check valve at the drain outlet from the site. This is so that during the rise of water, the pump pump out only water in the drain around the house, and water from the drainage ditch did not flow there.
All of this is easy to do and will be done. It's a pity that it will only be checked in the case, only next spring, in the meantime, I'm waiting for your advice in the comments ...
