USSR 1984. An amazing year: full of events and the last one before the start of perestroika
Recently, I came across a folder from the Soviet era for presenting a diploma to the winner of the competition in honor of the 40th anniversary of Victory.
I was about to throw it out, but I saw that old newspapers were sticking out of the torn end of the folder. Pulled out to see, there were clippings from the newspaper "Altayskaya Pravda" for June 8, 1984.
But this year was rich in events ...
Sport
In 84, two Olympiads were held: the winter one in Yugoslavia and the summer one in Los Angeles. In the Winter Olympics, the USSR took second place behind the GDR. And in the summer the USSR and most of the socialist countries refused to participate.
The reason was the refusal of the US authorities to provide the USSR and other socialist countries with written security guarantees, the refusal to allow Aeroflot to carry out charter flights for the delivery of Soviet athletes and the refusal to accept the motor ship "Georgia" in the port of Los Angeles, which they wanted to use as an Olympic floating base.
In addition to the Olympic Games, a series of international sports competitions "Friendship-84" was held with the participation of 9 socialist states.
Politics
In February 1984, the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Andropov Y.V. died, this post was taken by Chernenko K.U.
And in December M.S. Gorbachev visited London for talks on nuclear arms reductions. At the same time, Margaret Thatcher - Prime Minister of Great Britain said: “I like Gorbachev. We can deal with him. ".
Also this year, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was killed.
In November 1984, Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States for a second term.
World events
In the spring of 1984, the Soviet nuclear submarine K-314 and the American aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk collided in the Sea of Japan during an exercise codenamed "Team Spirit". The submarine surfaced under the bottom of the aircraft carrier. It is assumed that the aircraft carrier, like the submarine, carried nuclear weapons. Fortunately, this event did not bring big consequences.
In the summer of 84, the Soyuz T-12 spacecraft was launched. Crew - Dzhanibekov V. BUT., Savitskaya S. E. and Wolf I. P.. Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to walk into outer space.
Culture
And according to a clipping from an old newspaper found, you can see what was going on in cinemas then: "Start to liquidate", "Military novel", "Find and neutralize", "Dagger", "Return of the resident".
From foreign - "Inspector Razinya", "Revenge and the Law".
And this year the films "Cruel Romance" and "Love and Doves" were shot.
Newspaper for June 8, 1984. At that time, I just finished the 4th grade of school and went on vacation.
There was not much to watch on TV. Only two programs and even then not all day.
And while parents are at work - bike, friends and the river. The Ob River with a suitable beach is only about 1.5 km away. from home, so we spent a lot of time on the river.
Natural disasters on the planet
I also learned from clippings from this old newspaper about the natural disasters of that time.
Unprecedented heat in Sweden - + 25 ° C. Hurricane in Argentina. The wind at a speed of 130 km / h (36 m / s) blew roofs from houses, fell trees and telegraph poles. On the east coast of the United States, in Miami, Florida, as a result of heavy rainstorms, the streets were covered with a layer of water several meters. The rains washed away several bridges and seriously damaged roads. And in California at this time there was a heat and forest fires happened.
What else
And also this 1984, the Soviet programmer Alexey Pazhitnov presented the computer game Tetris.
Opened through traffic on the Baikal-Amur Maristral (BAM)
And on September 1, by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, it was declared a national holiday - "Knowledge Day"
And in this folder, newspaper clippings lay between a couple of sheets of vodka labels. Such simple labels, no medals, but with the indication of GOST and the price.
1984, in my opinion, turned out to be really eventful. And this is also the last year before the beginning of Perestroika.
