“It’s not for you to work with foam” - What did the old builders do so that they didn’t blow from the window sill
When you install windows, what you will not see from old technologies. These are forged nails with which the frame was nailed, and the frame itself is covered with bitumen on the outside, such protection from wood decay. But yesterday I was struck by a simple method that solved the problem of blowing from the windowsills.
Simple and reliable
Sometimes dismantling the old frame so as not to turn the wall into the trash, it turns out, in time longer than installing a PVC window. So it happened, and this time, having pretty much tinkered with the frame, began to gently knock out the window sill.
From time to time, the cracks in the masonry itself were terrible, but the house was warm and nowhere was it blown out.
I found out that under the windowsill, a perfectly fitted area, it turned out to be clay with sawdust, simple and ingenious.
A raw clay mortar is laid, pressed down by the level of the window sill, the protruding excess is removed, the tightness from drafts is ensured.
People knew how to simply and effectively solve construction problems without modern technologies, and even with manual tools. By the way, when I was dismantling the old roof, I also saw that clay with sawdust served as a heater on top.
So I think, if the old masters were given a modern instrument at that time, how much would they have tuned? What do you think?
