The more powerful the green mass is, the larger the head will be tied. That is, the more feathers grow, the larger the bulb will turn out. Therefore, during the growing season (growth of leaves), the presence of moisture in the soil is important.

How much water is required

There is no definite answer regarding the amount of water. It is necessary to keep the soil moisture at the level of the onion root system (at least 15 cm). In the initial growing season, the onion needs moisture so that the earth does not dry out.

Usually, onions are watered 2 times a week in the first half of the growing season, if there are sunny days, without rain.

Other nuances

It is not necessary to huddle the plants, otherwise rotting of the root collar may begin. This often happens under mulch.

Therefore, experts recommend to slightly loosen the soil so that the root collar does not decay, air exchange takes place better.

Of course, in rainy weather, onions do not require watering. Due to waterlogging, the bulbs can rot.

How to determine if you need to reduce watering

In the second half of the growing season, onion spills should be reduced. In July, the head has almost reached its optimal size, and matures, accumulating nutrients. Over time, the upper scales dry out. Excess moisture will harm the plant. Excessive humidity can cause fungal diseases.

While the onion is releasing a green feather, it needs moisture in the soil. Therefore, it is not necessary to stop the straits at this time.

About a month before harvesting (and this is the first decade of August), the onion stops the growth of green mass.

As soon as the feathers lose their turgor and begin to slope to the bottom, the root collar will soften, this will serve as a signal to reduce watering, over time they should be completely stopped. The onions will begin to ripen. For 2-3 weeks, the onion garden cannot be moistened.

Why onions are watered with saline

To protect onion planting from onion flies, you need to use salt, which is diluted with water. As a result of watering the beds with water and salt, the onion fly cannot get to the base of the bulb, so it lays the larvae on the upper scales, that is, on the surface of the head. With the next watering with saline, the larvae will be destroyed. During the season, onions are processed with this mixture 2-3 times.

You will need from 300 to 500 grams of salt per 10 liters of ox. You can add 2 tablespoons of ammonia and a little potassium permanganate to the mixture during the first processing. Pour from 200 to 250 ml of solution to one plant. This procedure is carried out after 2-3 weeks. One month before harvesting, watering with saline is stopped.
