We are insulating houses with mineral wool, and the European Union is already turning the screws: cotton wool may be banned

WITHtoday, many order an examination of the gas block for the presence of a radiation background, give automatic switches for loading in the electrical laboratory, but for some reason they only remember the shortcomings of mineral wool units. Nevertheless, based on my practice, I will say: mineral wool was and remains a widely used insulation in Russia and those CIS countries where I happened to build. But famous does not mean good and, moreover, the best.

I decided to summarize the experience of scientists who studied mineral wool, and ordinary people who live in houses insulated with it. In my opinion, it turned out to be a useful, albeit not very optimistic article. I advise thinking people to read carefully.

Recently, even the European Parliament has been keenly interested in the safety of the mineral wool. In 2019, the Romanian entrepreneur Cosmin Ratu was invited to the hearing. Working with mineral wool had a negative impact on the health of employees at his construction company, Roteam. According to Kosmin, the harm from this type of insulation is comparable to asbestos,

which WHO has long been recognized as a carcinogen and banned for use in the EU. Now, for obvious reasons, other issues related to health threats are on the agenda, but I think that in in the near future the expert community of the European Union will return to discussing the environmental hazard of mineral wool heaters.

The problem is of concern not only to Europe. Nine years ago, our Rospotrebnadzor also recorded an excess of formaldehyde MPC in the air of houses in the Usolsky-2 microdistrict in the town of Bereznyaki, in the Perm Territory. As it turned out, the main reason for the pollution was, for the most part, the mineral wool, with which the houses were insulated. And how many residential complexes in the country are insulated with mineral wool? A question with an asterisk ...

Recently, I have been in constant contact with a number of leading construction colleagues from Moscow and the EU countries. They are not surprised by this situation. They have long discouraged customers from using mineral wool as insulation for country houses.

Finally, I will say one thing about the dangers of formaldehyde: both the WHO and the Ministry of Health have long recognized this substance as a dangerous carcinogen for humans.

But the danger of mineral wool is not only the release of formaldehyde.Firstly, mineral dust gets on the skin and in the eye-nasal canal and provokes allergies and itching.

Secondly, I know from my own experience that the suspension from cotton wool is so fine that it does not sink to the floor for a very long time. The chances of collecting it even with a good construction vacuum cleaner are small.

Until I "dug" this topic deeper, I did not know that WHO had developed the Air Quality Guidelines for a long time, where all the negative consequences of using mineral wool insulation are clearly listed: from glass to stone. I advise you to read.

American experts James Locke, Clara Ross, who were the first to note the rate of increase in mortality at fiberglass and mineral wool factories in the EU and the USA, also contributed to the topic.

Summarizing the above, from now on I will also persuade my customers to abandon the use of mineral wool in favor of more environmentally friendly and safe heaters. With those who are interested in this topic, I am ready to share links to scientific papers and other documents mentioned (and not mentioned) in this article. Write comments and I will definitely answer. Thanks...
