DIY foam varnish: universal protection for wood, brick and concrete
Polyfoam (expanded polystyrene) is a material that is highly demanded in modern construction. This is a heater that is characterized by low cost, durability and high thermal insulation qualities. But few people know that foam can be used to make an excellent protective varnish for wood and mineral surfaces. How to make polystyrene foam varnish at home - read on.
What is necessary
To prepare the varnish, you will need the most common polystyrene (suitable for any packaging), gasoline (AI-92), xylene (solvent). Useful as inventory: a metal can with a lid (a paint can is suitable); knife; a device with which you can mix the composition.
Do not forget about safety precautions. When using volatile compounds such as gasoline and solvents, it is imperative to use protective equipment: goggles, respirator, gloves. Carry out work only away from sources of fire!
How to prepare varnish
- Polyfoam with a volume of 0.005 m³ (in size it is a piece of 50 * 20 * 5 cm) cut into small pieces so that they pass into the opening of the can.
- Pour 500 ml of gasoline into the jar.
- Dissolve the foam in gasoline in small batches. Mix. A white, plastic thick mass should form.
- Add 100 ml of xylene and mix thoroughly until smooth. When xylene is added, the thick mass will become liquid and transparent.
- Close the jar with a lid and leave for 20 minutes for a full reaction to take place. After the specified time, the varnish is ready and can be used.
- Adjust the consistency of the varnish by adding a thinner. If it is thick, add a little more xylene.
Foam varnish applications
This composition is a universal varnish and can be used on wood and wood-based materials, as well as on stone, brick and concrete. Its main advantage is its low cost compared to store counterparts.
Polystyrene varnish works in the same way as any other varnish. It penetrates into the structure of the material and creates a protective film. The composition protects the treated surfaces from moisture, precipitation, UV radiation, and also increases the wear resistance of materials.
The composition also has decorative functions - it saturates the natural colors of stone and wood, emphasizes the texture of materials, and adds shine to the surface.
