The engines on the Nauka module spontaneously started, which caused an uncontrolled rotation of the ISS, which was quickly eliminated
The International Space Station (ISS) began to change its original orientation after the engines installed on the Nauka multifunctional module were spontaneously turned on. In order to compensate for the rotation, the engines of the Zvezda module and then the Progress module were urgently turned on.
At the moment, all engines are off and the ISS orientation has been restored. And the reason for the triggering is still unknown. And the incident became known from the negotiations of the astronauts on the ISS with the mission control center (MCC) on Earth.
Problems with the module began long before the start
Initially, the Nauka module was a so-called backup to the Zarya module, but after that it was decided to upgrade it into a separate module for the Russian part of the ISS.
After lengthy construction and elimination of deficiencies found on the ground, the module went to the ISS on July 21, 2021, and 8 days later reached the ISS. At the same time, the "Science" module had problems in the fuel system, as well as in the automatic docking system "Kurs".
Despite these difficulties, the module was nevertheless docked to the ISS on July 29 at 16:30 Moscow time. At the same time, the "Science" took the place of the "Pier", which was subsequently flooded in the non-navigable part of the Pacific Ocean.
After completing the docking, the Russian cosmonauts O. Novitsky and P. Dubrov began the necessary preparatory work to open the hatches between the Zvezda and Nauka modules. And at the moment when the hatches were to be opened, the engines spontaneously fired.
At the moment, according to Roskosmos, experts are working to transfer Nauka into docked mode with the ISS, and all the work required will have to be completed in the near future.
And the incident with the inclusion of the engines of "science" in "Roskosmos" was called work with the remains of fuel in the system.
Well, we hope that everything will be fine with the Russian module "Science", and the astronauts working on orbit, will make a large number of successful experiments and scientific discoveries thanks to a new module.
