Choosing tomatoes without flavor
“How to live without tomatoes? Why live without tomatoes? And the allergy from one of their smell begins! "
This article is about unflavored tomatoes. I personally selected from more than 100 varieties of this season :)
And, as always, there were some discoveries. The topic is something unexplored.
So, the article will be useful not only for allergy sufferers.
I asked agronomists on the forum: where did the smells of tomatoes disappear? The answer was that they were lost as a result of selection.
There are 33 varieties and hybrids on my list of fragrant tomatoes. And today, not fragrant, - 19.
33 + 19 is far from 100, why?
- There are tomatoes with vanishing aromas
- Portions (sometimes they smell, sometimes they don't)
- There is a re-grade
- And some varieties are simply not ripe.
Then I will add the lists in the comments. If, of course, you are interested!
First discovery
So! I had an assumption that the early varieties are all without aroma. However, one, according to the description early, turned out to be fragrant. This is a bush of limited growth Cosmonaut Volkov. The name shows that the selection is Soviet.
As far as I understand, everything is complicated with this variety, someone has an Unlimited Growth Cosmonaut Volkov, the yield of some pleases, others do not at all. Taste too. This means that varietal traits are actively lost, and it is impossible to promise a flavor from the Cosmonaut Volkov variety.
For myself, I made an important conclusion even buying seeds of a fragrant variety or hybrid, we may not wait for the scent. And the opposite rule also applies, with spontaneous over-pollination, a variety without aroma can smell. So if you are allergic, ask someone to grow tomatoes. And give you those that don't smell.
Important: spontaneouscross-pollination in tomatoes is rare! A collector told me about this when I was looking for bags from cross-pollination. As a result, I sewed several bags, but did not hang them on the tomatoes. Since the risk is not great.
So, what kind of tomatoes I had odorless
For each variety, I will write the country where it was received, then we will draw conclusions.
Early:
June Forum
Labrador (Russia)
Moskvich (USSR, 1976)
Sweetheart (2008, Russia, "Sedek")
Chocolate cherry (Russia, Siberian Garden)
Yamal (USSR)
Medium early:
Dwarf Tai Dai Fred (USA, Australia)
Daria (local yellow variety)
Bear Creek (USA)
Mid-season:
Bull heart from the Gonsiorovskys (Russia, Minusinsky)
Green Maggot Mystery (Australia)
Soldatovo (Russia, Minusinsky)
Mid late:
Magnificent Bonnie (USA)
This list does not include varieties that have one thing from a bush with a scent, the other without.
Second opening
I assumed that there would be early varieties and American ones without aroma. It turned out that it was not so! As you can see there is no smell in varieties of different ripening periods, different selection.
Although, perhaps, spontaneous pollination affected.
The aroma is even more capricious than the taste - this is my second discovery. Therefore, it is usually modestly silent about him. And the absence of aroma cannot be guaranteed.. Bumblebees and wind do not give guarantees!
Well, since I understood this, why then any other lists, conclusions?
Lists give at least some picture. You just need to understand that surprises are possible. That's life!
