I made fire-retardant protection for wood from two components. 9 times cheaper than store

When building a roof, it is recommended to cover the rafter and the crate with a fire-retardant composition. This will prevent insects from attacking the wood. It will protect you from damage, especially in those places where wane and bark have remained. And the fire-retardant properties of the compounds will protect against other unforeseen events.

There is a large selection of such products in hardware stores. There are both ready-made and concentrates (for dilution with water). I got a canister of 10 liters of such a product for testing and covered the bar for the Mauerlat before laying it.

Means with indicator, color in the composition. Covered with a roller. For a timber in the amount of 6 pcs. the canister is gone completely. But at night it was raining and the whole train was washed away. I decided to cover after the roof is built, from the inside. About the construction of the roof article here.

And the consumption of the fire-bioavailable composition was not pleasing. For the entire roof, I will need at least 10 canisters.

This is more than 12 thousand. rub. The amount is not small. Or maybe make this tool yourself? What's in the composition? The composition on the label is simple: boric acid, dye and water. Is boric acid a fire retardant at the same time? I remembered that they were impregnating it with ecowool. And in this insulation not only insects and rodents do not start, but it does not support after combustion, maximum smolders upon contact with fire.

On the Internet, I found recipes on how to make a fire-biocomposition on your own. Stopped at one. In it, in addition to boric acid, soda ash is also added. At the same time, soda will give the composition even greater fire retardant properties.

So, the composition is as follows: for 9 liters of water you need: 1 kg of boric acid, 3 kg of sodium carbonate (soda ash) and a dye (optional).

We have a number of companies in the city that sell industrial chemicals. I got there a bag (25 kg) of each component:

The cost is as follows: boric acid - 1775 rubles / bag; soda ash - 1025 rubles / bag. Total: 2800 rubles. This is enough for 225 liters of the composition (if you add 1 kg of chemistry, and not 1: 3). The components were weighed by an electronic balance. As a dye and an additional antiseptic, I decided to try fukortsin and potassium permanganate from the pharmacy.

But the wood stained poorly with them. And later I bought a regular tinting paste for water paints.

With it, the composition most optimally colored the wood and it was possible to see where the wood was covered and where not. For application, I used an accumulator garden sprayer, which the roofers left at my request. They will pick it up later.

Any pneumatic sprayer or roller can be used. With a roller, although it is longer, the consumption of fire-retardant protection will be less.

The first diluted volume of the composition did not want to completely dissolve. Rather, 3 kg of soda is too much for 9 liters of water. The sprayer was constantly clogged with sediment. Soda dissolves better in hot water, but there was no desire to heat it. I reduced the amount of soda to 1 kg and then things went faster. Kohler added 50-100 ml.

In the place where I covered it with a fire-retardant composition from the first diluted batch, a white coating remained on the wood due to the high concentration of soda. The painted and unpainted parts looked like this:

In places, he covered it twice. It took several evenings. But I spent a lot of time cleaning the sprayer and diluting the composition. The process of covering the roof rafters can be seen in the video:

You can also watch the video where I learned about this recipe: https://youtu.be/OwatqHBdT7g

As a result, it took me less than half of the volume of the bags to process the roof. Bred 10 buckets. Those. I spent the maximum on processing 1400 RUB Whereas a product from a store would cost in the amount of 10 cans - RUB 12,000 The difference is huge. The leftovers will be used to cover other wood elements. The house will also have a small roof over the entrance porch.
