Want to make lilies more beautiful next summer? I advise you to do 4 steps of leaving before September
A fiery salute, comrade, diligent lily breeder!
Let's leave the peonies alone - they have already received their top dressing. The long-suffering digging of potatoes so far only ghostly looms on the horizon, but it already evokes melancholy.
Therefore, today on the agenda there will be 4 important actions that everyone who wants to see beautiful lilies on their site needs to do. They themselves will not grow decorative, no matter how naive we would like.
Step 1: Pruning lilies after flowering
By the end of summer, the lilies say goodbye to us. Their beauty will remain in photographs on the phone and in our hearts. And on the flower beds I see hanging petals, single stamens and seed pods.
Comrade! So that the plant does not think of spending energy on ripening the seeds, be patient and diligently cut off all the wilted flowers. Or what's left of them. Let the lily put all the resources into the ripening of the bulbs so that they can productively rest over the winter and show blooming power the next year.
Friendly advice: At the same time, inspect the lilies - there are no traitorous traces of pests on them. If found, then do not leave the lily without prompt help. Buy in the store "Iskra" or "Aktaru" and treat the flower bed according to the instructions. So that the plants do not go away for the winter weakened: there is nothing worse than this.
Don't overdo it! Trim the tops only. Lily does not want to give up her leaves and the almost autumn sun. The greens will nourish the bulb to the end. Harvest the stems only after their complete self-destruction - another important secret of autumn care for lilies.
Step 2: feeding the lily at the end of summer
Oddly enough, at least a month before the onset of cold weather, the lily needs to be fertilized. In this matter, she is in solidarity with peonies, roses and other perennials from the garden. Forget about dung and humus - treat the onions with appropriate potassium and they will fully ripen.
I offer 2 options:
- Proven over the years potassium monophosphate (33% potassium) - 10 g per 10 liters.
- An alternative is water-soluble potassium sulfate or potassium sulfate (as much as 51%) - 20 g per 10 liters of water.
The fertilizer solution will take effect immediately after watering. What is the advantage over the dry feeding option.
Friendly tip: When preparing a fertilizer solution, first stir the granules in a glass of warm water.
The method "for the lazy" is to carefully embed the complex mineral fertilizer "Autumn" into the soil around the flock of lilies under watering or rain, so that it begins to dissolve and act.
Advantage: the composition contains a full set of trace elements, the benefits of which cannot be denied. Disadvantage: will it have time to produce the full effect - the grandmother said in two, so you need to pour it now, until the end of August.
Step 3: loosening is really important
I have no doubt that your lily bed is kept perfectly clean. Therefore, I will not even write about the importance of the absence of weeds, otherwise I will question your concern for the garden.
But do not neglect loosening, comrade lily breeder! Carefully go through the top layer of the earth with a ripper when a treacherous crust appears on the ground. It prevents the roots and bulb from breathing.
By the way, we all call the ripper "herringbone". And you?
The closer things turn to autumn, the more it rains. As a result, the carapace appears on the flowerbed more and more often. It does not allow the soil to ventilate and dry out. Add to this high humidity, precipitation and a drop in temperature - we get an explosive mixture, due to which a weak lily can rot.
Step 4: Consider a Transplant
The unpretentiousness of lilies turns to the gardener in different directions. One of the most enjoyable is that there is no need to regularly dig and replant.
But, I will blot my eyes with a handkerchief: everything comes to an end. Although lilies look advantageous when planted in an array, crowding will sooner or later lead to problems and loss of a presentable appearance. Periodically, you need to sort out the nests of the bulbs, leave what you need and throw out the excess.
And the end of August is the time to think about which lilies from the garden will soon need to be sorted out or transplanted.
Do you like lilies and was this article helpful? Click, comrade, "Thumbs up"!
Sincerely yours, Fyodor Tyapkin-Sklyankin, planning to transplant lilies with tears in his eyes.
