Why on the sunny side concrete and brick break down faster. I show my example
When building with your own hands, there are not only successfully completed works, achievements, but also minor failures. Especially if you're experimenting. It is good if this is not a responsible object. But all the same it upsets.
Earlier, I talked about the construction of a fence from blocks cast independently using the "washed concrete" technology.
Recently I noticed that cracks have formed on the covers of the concrete part. And only from the southern, sunny side.
This is not plaster. These are monolithic concrete elements: blocks and covers. Cracks in the elements in three places of the fence. They are not shrinkage or deformation. Apparently, during their manufacture, the concrete was too liquid. This influenced its strength and frost resistance. There are many pores in concrete, water penetrates into them and breaks its structure. Although all the covers are coated with a fluidized concrete impregnation for increased strength, which increases its surface strength by 30%. And also the surface is varnished based on epoxy resins.
Moreover, the cracks are visible only from the south side. I carefully examined the northern, shady half - I did not find them. I suppose it has something to do with it. In early spring, when the sun heats the surface of the stone, the snow that lies on the lids melts. Water penetrates the concrete and freezes at night. This can happen dozens of times in just one spring. And in two years the concrete has lost its frost resistance.
I had two cans of varnish left over to cover the fence. I covered the lids with it. But this is unlikely to save the situation for a long time.
A similar situation occurs with bricks. It happens that it also collapses in this mode for several years. There are also many similar examples. All materials in such a cyclic mode of being saturated with water and freezing quickly lose their strength. Even granite is destroyed. But this happens most quickly on the south side of the buildings.
The way out can be like this. Order sheet metal covers (parapet covers).
According to estimates, it will be about 6,000 rubles. in standard brown color. If you paint with powder paint to match the color of the metal rocket (I have antique copper), then, of course, it will be more expensive.
