My autumn garden work
In the fall, you need to do a lot in the garden in order to get a harvest next year without unnecessary costs, nerves and wasted time.
Now I spend a lot of time in the garden - I need to remove excess shoots, cut out young growth, which is now very clearly visible. Pests can hibernate on this growth. For example, under the cherry on the shoots, the larvae of aphids, cherry slimy sawfly and other pests overwinter. Also, in thickened plantings, many spores of the fungus remain. These spores will develop in the spring and will infect not only my garden, but also the neighboring ones, because they are easily carried by the wind.
Raspberry pruning
Now is the time to cut out the raspberries. I have two types of raspberries - garden and remontant. The repaired one is still bearing fruit with might and main, it has a third wave, which will continue until the snow. There are always a lot of berries in autumn, although they are smaller than in summer. This is a very good raspberry, delighting with the harvest without interruption from June to October.
But it is too early to work with remontant raspberries. I will take care of this plant after the cold weather. But it's time to cut out the garden raspberries. She needs to remove biennial shoots that bore fruit this year. It is very easy to distinguish them - they are brown. And the new shoots this year are green.
I cut out all brown shoots, after which the raspberry tree becomes well-groomed, transparent, light. And without thickening, there are fewer opportunities for pests to winter and the development of diseases.
I put the cut shoots on the bottom of the compost pit, or burn them. Most often the latter, since the pit has already been formed by this time, and the old one, in which the compost has already matured, has not yet been opened.
In addition, I also cut off the tops of raspberries so that they are not higher than 150 cm. They will still freeze in winter, because the bark has not formed, the shoots are green.
After pruning, I try to fertilize the raspberries with ash and superphosphate. And then cover the raspberry with humus or compost so that in the spring it will immediately receive nutrition. That's all I do with raspberries.
I cut the currants
I have three types of currants - black, white and red. All bushes are very good, bearing fruit regularly. This is because every fall I cut the old three-year-old shoots. It is easy to distinguish them - they are the lowest, thickest, gnarled. I cut out 2 shoots.
After that, in the spring, new stems actively appear, the bush rejuvenates, does not shade. And so every year, removing old branches, I do not let the currants grow old.
Strawberry mustache
By autumn, strawberry bushes turn into a solid carpet due to the fact that they put on a mustache, at the ends of which there are rosettes. These rosettes are actively growing, the bed thickens. I mercilessly cut out all the whiskers and throw them in the compost. I leave only the main bushes, strong and powerful.
But in the third year I collect all the mustache, plant it on another, pre-prepared plot and the strawberries move to a new bed. One year I get two beds - one old, the second very young, not yet fruitful. And in the fall, I completely remove the old ridge. So, after 4 years I change the landings. And the harvest is always good.
These are autumn works. What are you doing in the garden now?
