Three Ways to Clamp the Workpiece to the Bowl Turning Lathe

These methods in some cases can replace each other, but still their application depends on the shape and size of the workpiece.

The first way

A good and reliable way to use your faceplate.

The planer is screwed to the workpiece from the inside of the future bowl. First, the outer side is sharpened, and when turning the inner side, the traces of the screws will be removed.

To fix the faceplate, you need to use white or yellow self-tapping screws with a large thread. Self-tapping screws with a diameter of 5 mm are well suited. The length of the self-tapping screws depends on the depth of the bowl or plate, and if the depth is small, then it is advisable to increase the number of self-tapping screws - 8-12 pieces.

The use of a faceplate is well suited for workpieces with a large diameter: 250-300 mm.

Second way

Another way to secure the workpiece for the bowl is to use a screw, which is later clamped in a lathe chuck.

To tighten the screw in the center of the workpiece, you need to drill a hole with a diameter slightly smaller than the screw diameter so that the screw thread can engage in the workpiece. The depth of such a hole is made along the length of the thread of the fastening screw.

The workpiece is screwed onto the screw so as to press against the chuck. Do not tighten too much so as not to break the thread.

This fixing method is well suited for workpieces with a diameter of less than 250 mm.

Third way

When you need to fix a workpiece that has no plane, a workpiece with bark and it is planned to leave the natural edge of the bowl, then fastening with a four-toothed center is well suited.

To securely fix it, you need to drill a hole with a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the four-tooth center. You need to drill to hardwood. (scroll through the gallery)

Further, the workpiece is installed in the machine and pressed by the driving center of the machine tailstock.

Bowls are usually sharpened at a speed of about 900 rpm, and at the initial stage of turning this speed may be lower.
