4 gross mistakes in pruning roses before winter that cause shortsighted gardeners to lose bushes
Do you want to prune your roses in the garden so that you can see them alive and healthy in spring? Then a fiery salute, comrade, a caring florist! Today on the agenda of the autumn day - 4 fatal, but frequent mistakes of unknowing gardeners, destroying plants and undermining the authority of the procedure itself.
“I've pruned, and the rose was gone,” say those who did the pruning incorrectly. Although, in fact, it is not the haircut that is to blame, but their mistakes.
Pity the rose
Autumn pruning of roses is designed to solve 2 good problems:
- Shorten the bush so that it is easy to cover. My every bush is dear to me, so I make a shelter for every rose bush in the garden. And this year he was not too lazy: he made his wife sew ugly spunbond caps.
- Remove anything that could pose a fundamental hazard. I am talking primarily about thin, weak and immature shoots. If they get caught in the cold, they won't withstand the blow like adults. And they will rot and become a source of infection for the entire bush.
There is no doubt that all unripe (red), weak, dried shoots should be cut in the fall.
Note to a friend: The radical pruning scheme depends on the type of rose. Most bush can be easily cut by a third or half, while climbing plants usually bloom on last year's shoots. Clarify, comrade!
Leave the leaves
A carpet of fallen leaves is good on the paths of some Bunin alleys. Do not naively think that it will add charm to the rose garden:
- Dry leaves hanging on the stems and mixed with the ground look disgusting.
- Dry leaves are a refuge for pests, a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi in miniature. If you want a healthy garden, put everything under a clean one, especially if the roses were sick this season. Though aphids, even spotted.
I remove all the leaves. In front of the shelter. Armed with a thick welding glove, I remove all the withered leaves from the stems. I rake the foliage from the flower bed and burn it safely.
Hurry up
There is nothing worse than pruning a rose ahead of time.. Gardeners use pruners when they have free time. And then they lament that after pruning, the rose went into growth (suddenly, right?) And all the young growth was knocked down by the cold.
Comrade! Only prune the rose when it's frosty every night. That is, stable cold weather will be established. Believe me: in such conditions, the rose will not even think of giving a young growth, and will calmly go to rest.
Do not check the vaccination site
90% of our roses are stock for unpretentious rose hips. And the vaccination site should always be buried in the ground. Otherwise, the whole meaning is lost - the varietal plant will simply freeze out. And next spring you and your household will admire the powerful shoots of the charming rose hips.
The rains over the summer could have washed away the vaccination site. After trimming, be sure to check if this has happened. If necessary, cover with light soil. But in moderation so that nothing comes out.
