Tips for the gardener: how to plant onion sets in the fall before winter

To make it easier to work in the garden in the spring, the onion sets were planted in the fall for early greenery and harvest. Planting vegetables before winter has many advantages.

I pick onions 3-4 weeks earlier than the same onions that I plant in spring in May. He also rarely shoots. It needs to be cared for less in the spring. When the first greens appear on the feather, as a rule, the weed seeds are still deep in the ground. It is enough in the spring to loosen the aisles in the garden bed and mulch them when the feather reaches a length of 10-12 cm.

In March-April, there are practically no pests in the onion garden, because they are still at rest. During the spring, the plant develops well the root system and builds up greenery, which helps to strengthen the immune system, which leads to a rich summer harvest. In April-May, there is still enough moisture in the soil, so the onion does not need watering during this period.

Features and conditions of landing

Onion heads for planting before winter should be chosen with a small diameter of 1-1.5 cm. The timing of disembarkation depends on the ambient temperature: it should not be higher than +6 degrees Celsius during the week. At a higher temperature, the planting material can sprout, in which case the onion is unlikely to overwinter.

For planting, you need to choose a sunny place on the site, since onions are considered a photophilous crop. The best place is high beds. The rise from the ground should be at least 15-20 cm so that the bow does not freeze.

Fertilizers

For 1 square meter, you need to add a bucket of compost, a bucket of humus (from organic matter). From mineral fertilizers, you can use 20 grams of superphosphate and 20 grams of potassium sulfate, as well as a glass of ash. All fertilizers applied must be dug up and wait 2-3 weeks before planting the onions for the soil to settle.

Predecessors

Good predecessors for onions are zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkin, that is, those crops that loosen the soil well and saturate it with nutrients.

How to plant

The planting depth of onions is 7-10 cm. If you grow a vegetable for greens, then it is enough to leave 2-3 cm between the bulbs. Row spacing - 20 cm.

The bottom of the prepared grooves must be sprinkled with ash and dolomite flour, which will deoxidize the soil and add mineral elements to the ground. For better drainage, river sand can be poured onto the bottom with a layer of no more than 0.5 cm.

Before planting, the onion heads (preferably 2 weeks in advance) must be disinfected in a solution of the drug "Maxim" ("Fitosporin") or a pink solution of potassium permanganate. After placing the onion heads in the grooves, they must be covered with a layer of earth of at least 4-5 cm and the soil must be compacted.

With the onset of stable subzero temperatures, the bed can be mulched with straw, dry leaves, spruce branches, if there is little snow in winter. In the spring, when the snow melts, the shelter from the garden should be removed.
