Russia has successfully created a prototype of nuclear fuel for the world's first low-power NPP

The world's first low-power land-based nuclear power plant will be built in the Ust-Yanskiy region of the Republic of Sakha, and the RITM-200N (icebreaking version of a nuclear reactor) will be taken as a basis.

The fact that a fuel prototype has already been successfully manufactured for such stations became known from the message of MSZ JSC (Machine-Building Plant, TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom).

Low-power nuclear power plants are the best solution for isolated areas

In the future, such low-power nuclear power plants will be built in places where the construction of full-fledged nuclear power plants economically impractical solution, and access to electricity from other sources is not and is not expected in the future.

The creation of such low-power NPPs was included in the development program of Russia, and it is assumed that they (low-power NPPs) will have block structure, the capacity of which, if necessary, can be easily increased by simply adding a new module to the already acting.

So, according to the roadmap, the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Republic of Sakha will be completed by 2028, and the installed capacity of the station will be 55 MW. In this case, the service life of non-replaceable equipment should be 60 years.

The production of fuel assemblies will start in 2025, and the production of the reactor core should begin in 2026. At the same time, before the production of a new fuel cartridge is put on stream, all the necessary pre-reactor checks will be carried out.

What are the prospects for low-power nuclear power plants in the future

In fact, the so-called low-power nuclear power plants are of interest not only to Russia. Almost all large countries of the world (China, USA, Europe, etc.) are actively studying the prospect of their use in their territories.

After all, the widespread use of such reactors in the future will be able to significantly bring the carbon-free era of electricity generation closer.

Well, we will closely monitor the implementation of the project, and it is quite possible that in the future there will be a queue for Russian nuclear power plants of low power and unique fuel.
