Queens before frost - chrysanthemums
I never thought that chrysanthemums are extremely popular. And there are so many varieties! I will share my experience as an amateur, and I will be grateful if you share yours. So, I invite you to visit the queens of autumn - chrysanthemums.
Fashionable bouquet:
We have not had such huge snowflakes! It is probably difficult to grow them.
In Kursk, undersized varieties of chrysanthemums are very popular - sometimes bright, sometimes delicate bouquets, or whole round hats of little heroes who are not afraid of the cold. Caps are multiflora chrysanthemums.
The magic of color. Frost and multiflora
They planted it without a hitch, did not add anything, they had a large coma of land (the package was barely lifted).
For starters, this chrysanthemum was distinguished by a change in color. They bought it like this:
There are a couple of tips on the Internet that we did not like, and we did not do this:
- Prune chrysanthemums before planting (and beauty !?) to better take root
- Immediately plant it in a pot, store it in a dark place until spring
We preferred to admire her in the flowerbed before frost.
As always, winter came quickly. Closer to frost, both bushes were cut off and covered with leaves. This was a mistake.
What should have been done with multiflora? As we understand it, there are two opposite approaches:
- Do nothing, just cut off so that the branches stick out 10 cm
- Ensure dry wintering: make a hut out of branches (cover with spruce branches). Or cover with earth. In the spring, it is important to remove all this on time so that the bushes do not vomit.
This is for all kinds of wintering chrysanthemums.
Multiflora has an important difference from other species. Its fragile twigs take root easily and winter well in a dark, cool place. With minimal soil moisture. This is to preserve the valuable variety. You can root cuttings, cut them from twigs, 4 centimeters each.
The main recommendation for multiflora is to dig up before frost and store in pots in a dry basement. Expose on the windowsill from February.
In our case, it is easier to buy new ready-made ones, if wintering fails, there are bushes from 100 rubles. Here is the multiflora of this year, for 150 rubles:
I read the opinion that multiflora does not hibernate in ordinary soil at all, with any shelter. However, our last year's beauty overwintered, albeit one out of two bush:
About this winter
I must say that this winter, more than ever, almost all chrysanthemums of all varieties died.
So the chrysanthemum girlfriends remained only in the photo (not multiflora):
Although they grew up for many years, they were seated in the spring, and in the winter they were never sheltered.
The reason for this trouble with chrysanthemums: freezing rain in December 2020 and February 2021. G. Everything that survived can be called a miracle, it is not clear why.
About our other small-flowered beauties
By the end of October, despite the frost at night down to -3 ° C, the new favorites feel good:
There was more in the beginning:
It’s a pity for the yellow sun, we didn’t like the nights, but the chrysanthemum took root:
They also planted it without a hitch, this time each had a very small clod of earth. In general, all of these queens can be grown in pots and pots. Small root.
What else can I say, there are varieties that definitely do not winter with us. However, in each region, zoned perennial chrysanthemums are sold. They hibernate unless a natural disaster such as freezing rain strikes.
What's your chrysanthemum experience?
I would be grateful for your subscription and communication :)
