I thought of sowing an "Orchid for the Poor" for the garden: what is good about an unpretentious flower for summer residents, that I was on fire to plant
Do you want to know about a beautiful, unusual and unpretentious one-year-old flower for your flower bed? Then a fiery salute, a gardener that does not waste energy! Today on the agenda is a wonderful candidate for decorating a summer cottage: an attractive flower that does not make brains..
After all, when, no matter how chilly and dirty in autumn, plan future plantings over a glass of tea, looking melancholy out the window at the beds with winter garlic! After the third, I firmly decided - I will sow the "Orchid for the Poor". It may not be quite an orchid, but I am not quite, pah-pah, poor man. We will be friends.
Acquaintance with a new flower
Last summer I had to visit a distant relative. To someone you don't know, but you have to pretend that you are glad to meet and miss you. A flower never seen before was planted along the path of her garden.
From a distance, it seemed to me that it was a giant snapdragon. But the new plant differed both in the size of the flowers, and in their shape - the lion's mouth was too large, and the riot of flowering. It formed a dense, high border of petals - beauty!
-It Schizanthus! - with the air of a connoisseur, a relative announced to me, and I felt like an ignorant gardener.
But the flower has a second, less intricate name - "Orchid for the poor." A couple of centuries ago, noble Englishmen grew orchids, brought from the tropics by ship, in their Victorian greenhouses. The simpler people did not have the opportunity to buy curiosities. And there were no greenhouses to grow them. But in the gardens there was a place for an unpretentious flower, the shape of which resembles the shape of an orchid flower.
Technical characteristics of Schizanthus
Most of the garden schizanthus are Vizeton and feathery, on the basis of which a variety of hybrids have been bred. But they all have in common:
- Height 50-60 cm. Planting in a group will not become a miniature curtain, but a prominent island of flowers in the garden.
- Flowering time from mid-June to deep frost. With a timely disembarkation, of course.
- Varied coloration from milky to burgundy. In a warm range - blue and even blue schizanthus, I did not find, but there are purple ones.
Note to a friend: I found information that schizanthus are ideal for growing in pots. So you can decorate not only a flower bed, but also a veranda or a gazebo.
By the way, in the Russian sale seeds are found under a completely wild name - schizanthus. Bear in mind, comrade, looking for a bag in the store!
The subtleties of growing Schizanthus
The best time for sowing seedlings is the second half of March. The process of growing young shazanthus (hehe!) Is no different from growing the same asters or petunias. We plant it in the ground in May, when the threat of frost has passed.
There are only 2 secrets of growing truly beautiful schizanthus bushes:
- He loves bright lights.
- He likes frequent watering.
Plant in an open area, water regularly and feed occasionally - "Orchid for the Poor" will definitely thank you!
Did you like schizanthus and was the article helpful? Then press, comrade, "Thumbs up"!
Sincerely yours, Fyodor Tyapkin-Sklyankin, who was thinking about his financial status while writing this article.
