In general, some stress for the impressionable. And to get away from all this "crap", let's analyze a couple of interesting facts about the life of such geographically distant, but close-minded Scots; and also we will plunge into our own history in order to understand who the "got to the handle" really are. The end of financial slavery!
What does the average Russian think about mortgages? Bondage, a collar, slavery, a financial collar, in life would pay off... in general, for the "good" deeds of banks, people still hate and curse them. And perhaps this is correct - the interest rate falls far short of the income of the majority of citizens. Not everyone can pay off their mortgages lightly. We digress a little from the Scots. So, as soon as they fully pay off the mortgage bondage, they immediately paint the door red. This means that the home is now privately owned, and the owner no longer thinks about how to live on half his salary and is now sleeping peacefully. The red door is a sign of joy associated with the end of many years of financial yoke!

This definition has nothing to do with doors, handles and other fittings, although it may seem so at first glance. “He who has reached the end” is a person who is impoverished to the limit, who does not hesitate to eat waste from a garbage can.
The expression originated in Russia (century unknown). Then there were no plastic bags where you could put food, so bakery products, namely traditional rolls, were baked with a handle. It was practical, because this handle can be used to carry the bread comfortably. And if you pass a rope through these handles, tie it with a ring and put it around your neck (like drying and bagels in the not too distant past), then you could carry a dozen rolls with free hands!
So, the handle of the roll was, though bread, but rather tough and tasteless. In addition, merchants and fastidious buyers could take it with dirty hands. And hygiene in those days was not up to par, and therefore, in order not to spend a couple of days with diarrhea or a week with vigorous dysentery, the handle was broken off and thrown away. And this pen was eaten either by dogs or by more nimble bipedal competitors who simply have nothing to eat. In general, a "man who has reached the point" is a beggar who has lost his moral character and eats waste without any hesitation.
