Every good downpour now causes a flood. Cars float like traffic jams, people move waist-deep in water, streams of water destroy urban infrastructure. Why did it become so? What is the reason? Let's figure this out!

Why Sochi, Rostov, Krasnodar, Moscow and other cities began to sink from the rains: the reason is simple and this is not a rainstorm

What versions are there?

On the Internet, you can find two main reasons why cities are drowning during rainstorms.

  • The first says that the city planners are to blame for everything, who, according to some, improperly designed the storm sewers. But the bulk puts forward a version that these same city planners simply stole the money allocated to them for the improvement of cities, and instead of a full-fledged downpour, they made hatches to divert the eyes. Allegedly, therefore, we are drowning. But this, of course, is unlikely ...
  • The second reason is seen by many in global warming and climate change, which cause an abnormal amount of precipitation. Scientists predict that in the next thirty years the intensity of rains will increase, rivers will overflow even more extensively and the problem of flooding of territories will only grow. But we are talking about cities, and this version takes place, but does not answer our question.

So what's the reason? Let's figure it out!

It's about our comfort!

In recent years, the appearance of our cities has been changing rapidly. First, they grow and cover ever larger areas. Secondly, they become more comfortable, more beautiful and more comfortable for life. And the whole reason for floods is in this very improvement, which reduces the absorption capacity of the soil several times!

What is urban beautification? These are asphalt roads, paved sidewalks, courtyards, houses and high-rise buildings rolled into concrete and tiles. A modern, well-maintained city is, in fact, a waterproof canvas lying on the ground. Therefore, the conditional 100 mm of precipitation with almost zero soil absorption in urban areas has the effect of 300-500 mm of precipitation!

All this happens because the areas of soil that should absorb this rainwater are covered with asphalt, concrete, tiles, roofs of houses. The water simply has nowhere to go and it rushes in stormy streams along the city streets.

Experiment: Spread a few square meters of cellophane on the ground and pour a bucket of water over it. Where will the water go? It will stay on the surface! Punch a few holes in this cellophane, which will serve as a "rain shower", and the water will gradually begin to drain. Now pour a bucket of water onto the ground and the water will go away almost immediately.

So a modern city with its improvement can be conventionally called a cellophane film in a small hole. Hence the floods. And one more observation: when the rains once again drown Anapa, Rostov or Krasnodar, it is worth driving 3-5 kilometers away from the city and there is no such problem!
