How to keep the well from freezing even in the most severe frosts: a simple and effective way
Sometimes no insulation can save the well from freezing. This hydraulic structure requires proper maintenance, otherwise, in severe frosts, you can be left without water. If you are not sure that your well is protected from freezing, then make the simplest device that is guaranteed to eliminate this problem. This method will also protect metal and plastic water containers stored outdoors from ice formation. Read on about this!
What does that require?
To make a well "anti-freeze" you will need:
- plastic bottles with a capacity of 5 liters with lids - 1-3 pcs .;
- building sand;
- strong rope or thin cable;
- a piece of a professional pipe or a bar as a lintel.
How to do it?
The device is very simple to manufacture. Pour exactly half of the sand into the bottle; tighten the lid tightly; tie a rope or cable to the container handle. Perform the entire operation in the cold. If you do this in a heated room, then in the cold the air in the container will cool down, shrink, the bottle will lose the necessary elasticity.
Further, if there are no superstructures above the well, put a jumper. Lower the bottle into the well so that it is half submerged in water and tie it to a lintel or superstructure. The number of bottles depends on the expected frost: if the temperature drops below minus 25 degrees, it is better to use three bottles; at light frosts 1-2 pcs.
Important! If the water level in the well changes, make sure that the bottles are always exactly half in the water!
How it works?
Any thick ice begins with a thin crust. Frozen water tends to expand. So, when the ice crust squeezes the container, it receives opposition from the air pressure in this plastic container. With this counteraction, a thin ice crust always breaks, which prevents ice formation. And the sand only serves as a weighting agent.
