The simplest device for making box spikes
With this device, it turns out to mill all the details of the box at once. Two approaches and tenons for assembling the box are ready.
I have long wanted to make a device for making box spikes. I looked at different options on YouTube, Pinterest and other sites - looking for options for a router.
Basically, I found devices in the form of various carriages for a stationary mounted router. But there was no urgent need, and honestly, all these adaptations seemed complicated to me, so I put off "for later".
Recently, I decided to make several boxes in the workshop for various small things. I decided to collect these boxes using thorns.
After a little thought, I decided that for most tasks one size spikes would be enough and there was no need to complicate the task.
This is how this simple device turned out. The idea is generally in the air, and it is quite possible that there are similar implementations.
To make this device, I bought a perforated plate from a hardware store. Marked and drilled a mount in it on the router platform. I cut out a corner on the side of the plate so that the cutter could pass freely.
Next, I prepared a 8x8 mm rail. I also used an 8 mm cutter. I fixed this rail on the plate at a distance of 8 mm from the cutter. To do this, I used a trim of the same rail.
I glued the guide on double-sided tape, and fixed it on the back with a pair of self-tapping screws. This turned out to be quite enough for the device to work.
Using the fixture is also very simple. The details for the drawer are folded together: short in the middle, long at the edges. Then I put them on the end and shift two parts in the middle by 8 mm. and fix this package with a clamp. Then I clamp it in a vice and once again check the misalignment of the parts. Now I check the depth of the thorn, it should be equal to the thickness of the box wall.
And then the milling of the spikes begins. Taking into account the rotation of the cutter and the location of the guide, you need to mill, starting from the left and move the router towards you.
The first pass the guide is pressed against the parts of the box on the left, in subsequent passes the guide runs along the finished groove.
After making tenons on one side, the parts of the box are pulled out of the vice, two short parts in the center are shifted to the other edge. Then this package is set up in the same way as at the beginning and the remaining tenons are milled.
The spikes are the same, the connection is even and tight.
For clarity, I suggest watching a video clip.
Several nuances
Such a platform is easy to make for any router.
It is better to use a spiral cutter, it is easier to work with a large milling depth.
Spikes can be made in several passes, if the cutter does not immediately take the full depth of the spike. Tested this approach, the connection is good.
If you want such sites, it is easy to make several pieces for different sizes of cutters, and the guides should be made of metal instead of wood.
