The neighbor was going to paint a new bath
Our neighbors, opposite, have a new sauna made of beautiful molded logs. Beauty is like a little house from a fairy tale. But yesterday my husband and other neighbors went to see them for a new thing, and after they came, he told me that the neighbor was going to paint the bathhouse this year. Violently, he says, convinced him to postpone painting until the first spring days. Although the owner of the bath has not yet made a final decision, he decided to consult with the masters.
Why is it worth postponing painting the bathhouse in the fall?
It is November, there have just been frosts, but thaw, rain and snow and wind is expected. Therefore, it makes no sense to paint wood with even the best paint for a number of reasons:
1. In order to paint the wood qualitatively, the composition must penetrate into the depths of its layers. Therefore, the moisture content of the tree should not be very high. Indeed, at high humidity, the fibers will be filled with water and the paint will have nowhere to penetrate.
2. The instructions for the paint say that to work with it, the air humidity should not be higher than 80%. This is the recommendation of the manufacturer, which gives guarantees only if it is fulfilled. I think that the manufacturer will not give bad advice. And in rainy weather, the humidity reaches 100%.
3. And at subzero temperatures, although the humidity is not high, the wood fibers are filled with ice, microscopic crystals. Of course, we are not talking about the penetration of paint inside.
4. The brush will harden, the structure of the paint will change, it will be too thick. Or worse, it will delaminate.
Therefore, if you really want to waste expensive paint and apply a layer on the logs, which you then have to remove, doing double work, then please do it!
But the neighbor has his own arguments
But the neighbor is very worried that over the winter the logs will burn out and turn gray. He wants to keep their bright color. He is also afraid that they will be saturated with moisture even more than they are now, so he will have to wait a long time to dry.
He is already so upset that the construction, which was planned for the end of the summer, dragged on almost until winter.
Moreover, the paint, which is waiting in the wings, is positioned as "winter paint". That is, like, you can use it even at sub-zero temperatures.
But everyone who spoke to him says that this is only a marketing ploy, because such paint will not extract moisture and ice from the fibers, which means that it will not give adhesion. She herself might be fine. But the result will be as described above.
When to paint?
It is necessary to paint wood in the summer. In dry weather, preferably sunny. Then the layers of the coating lay flat, dry quickly and do not give the effect of scales after a few months.
The neighbor himself must decide what to do in this situation, but to me the arguments of the men seem quite reasonable. Of course, it's a shame if the wood loses its sunny color. But it is possible to bring it back with colored paint. It is not necessary to cover with colorless. So the bathhouse will remain beautiful in any case.
