At whose expense and how will the "green" projects be implemented in Moscow?
Despite all the existing difficulties, the trend towards sustainability is gaining ground all over the world. In large cities, so-called "green" projects are being implemented, within the framework of which public transport is being modernized, new metro stations are being built and the electric transport network is being developed in every possible way.
Moscow is one of the first cities in Russia where the fight for the environment is in full swing. More precisely, it even runs: it already seems that electric buses run in every district, the metro is being built at an unprecedented pace, new lines and stations are being added.
Let's figure out how effective this concern for nature is, what else is planned to be done, and most importantly - at what means all this will be realized.
What is planned to be done
So, to begin with, a few words about what is planned to be implemented within the framework of "green" environmental projects. First of all, the Moscow authorities intend to continue to actively put into operation electric buses, and to take ordinary motor buses off the streets. By the end of this year, there will be 1,000 more electric buses in the capital.
But replacing just one bus with its more modern and environmentally friendly sibling reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 60.5 tons per year! This means less exhaust fumes, smog and more clean air.
In addition, the construction of the Big Circle Metro Line is underway. So, by the end of 2023, 18 new stations will be opened on it. Transport accessibility in many areas will improve and there will be fewer traffic jams. And CO2 emissions will be reduced by an average of 21 thousand tons per year!
The numbers are startling, and these initiatives are certainly noble. But at what expense will all this be realized? Let's figure it out.
Green bonds as a way to invest in environmental projects
As world practice shows, “green” initiatives are very large-scale projects and simply require huge cash infusions. Yes, we have already managed to pollute our home planet so much. For many billions of dollars. To finance environmental initiatives, the authorities raise money from a variety of sources: bank loans, federal subsidies, and bond issues.
In recent years, major cities in Europe and the United States have started using so-called green bonds. And already through this instrument, about 1.4 trillion US dollars were raised.
The Moscow mayor's office decided to follow the same path. Moscow is the first constituent entity in the Russian Federation to issue its own "green" bonds. They will make it possible to implement all initiatives aimed at significantly reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and improving the overall environmental situation in the capital.
This is how important initiatives will be funded to preserve our atmosphere from further pollution. And the purchasers of the bonds will be able to receive not only coupon income, but will also take part in the transformation of the capital of Russia into an ecologically clean city.
Please tell me if you are ready to participate in such a transformation (write about it in the comments)? And how do you personally feel about environmental protection and green initiatives?
Thank you for your attention!
