10 gross mistakes when plastering walls. How to prevent them? Tips from an experienced foreman
In my opinion, plaster and screed are the most significant renovation jobs. Therefore, today I decided to talk about the 10 most common mistakes that the master makes when plastering walls. I advise you to spend a couple of minutes reading this article, so that later you do not spend hundreds of thousands of rubles on alterations.
What mistakes do the masters make when plastering walls:
1. Apply a petrified mixture
Often, it takes some time from the acceptance of the material to the start of work, and all this time the mixture is stored in rooms with high humidity. As a result, it cakes and begins to clump. Masters believe that when mixed with a mixer, the lumps will turn into a homogeneous mass. But this is not the case. If you plaster the walls with such a mixture, you will get a low-quality surface.
I often use Ceresit CT 29 cement mix. The packaging indicates that it must be stored dry on pallets. In original undamaged paper packaging - no more than 12 months from the date of production, in foil packaging - no more than 18 months from the date of production. Do not neglect the instruction. It is important.
2. Do not use a primer
A primer is necessary in order to increase adhesion and create a film, thanks to which the wall material picks up moisture from the plaster in a smaller volume, and the plaster releases it more slowly. With a primer, the plaster does not dry out and remains in high-quality condition.
Many are trying to save money on the primer, but it is not clear why. Check out its cost. For example, 10 liters of Ceresit CT 17 PRO primer cost 700-800 rubles. The savings come out cheap. Trust me, it's not worth it!
3. Do not cover the contour of the room - windows, doors, roof
Many masters do not close the outline. As a result, the room is ventilated too quickly, the sun's rays fall on the walls, unnatural conditions are created, and the plaster dries up, flakes and cracks.
4. Dry plaster purposefully with devices
Very often in the winter, craftsmen install a heater in order to speed up the drying process of the plaster. Here, as in the third point, drying out will lead to unpleasant consequences.
5. Apply plaster to a perfectly smooth surface
This cannot be done. If you have perfectly smooth monolithic belts, then you will have to make serifs with a puncher or remove the top layer with a grinder to ensure grip. The optimal solution for preparing a smooth monolith for plastering is concrete contact. I am using Ceresit CT 19.
6. Fiberglass mesh is not used at the junction of dissimilar materials
Between the lintel above the window, the beam and the wall material, it is necessary to glue the mesh, because shrinkage, moisture absorption and thermal expansion differ from material to material.
7. Mount the mesh on the wall, not in the plaster layer
You can't do that. First, a plaster layer is applied, then the mesh is glued, and the surface is re-plastered.
8. Beacons are mounted incorrectly
Often, beacons are fixed on buns with a large step, while not fixing the edges. This is fraught with sagging and the formation of pits of 1-2 mm. To avoid this, beacons should be filled 100%.
9. Keep the beacons in the plastered wall
This will affect future finishes. Firstly, the lighthouse lends itself to corrosion, and secondly, it will still be noticeable. Therefore, you need to dismantle the lighthouse and cover the attachment points with plaster.
It's the same with the metal corners. Don't use them! Use special PVC corners.
10. Use substandard materials
In order to get a good result, you need good materials. Unfortunately, the construction market is full of low-quality products, and many craftsmen are trying to save money. Should not be doing that. Give preference to trusted manufacturers with a proven track record. It's good if these are materials from one system.
Personally, I always use for internal work Ceresit materials:this manufacturer has tile adhesives, primers, grouting, plaster facade insulation systems, flooring materials and much more.
