Three pros and cons of seeds in white and color bags, is it worth buying cheap out of a desire to save
Winter months for gardeners and flower growers are the most convenient for buying seeds. There is nowhere to rush, you can safely go shopping, read the characteristics on the bags, notice something for yourself. There are not as many people in the seed department as in the spring, when it is difficult to squeeze through the hangers with packages.
I have already bought everything that I have planned for myself, but, reading the stories of experienced gardeners, all the time I am eager to buy something else in order to surprise my guests with the harvest.
Two types of packaging
In large stores, where I usually buy planting material, there are two types of packaging.
Most that immediately catches the eye, attracts, arouses interest, these are seeds in color packages. They are bought by gardeners in 90% of cases. And you often hear complaints that you have got a re-grading. They write a lot that the characteristics on the packaging do not correspond to what has grown as a result.
And this year I had a similar experience - I bought Persimmon tomatoes, which I have wanted to try for a long time. And a completely different plant grew, with bright yellow heart-shaped fruits. The variety, by the way, turned out to be very prolific, but this is not Persimmon. And I was looking for these very sweet tomatoes.
A small group of packages, which are bashfully hidden in the lowest tier of the rack - white or gray packages. There are not so many of them, and people rarely pay attention to them. Anyone who does not know what lies there will not even bend over.
But I know for sure that there are excellent seeds, only they are 20 or 30 times cheaper than those that flaunt in the best places.
Advantages and Disadvantages of White Seed Packages
These nondescript packages have both advantages over colored ones and disadvantages.
The advantage is:
Of course, the price. As mentioned above, the difference is 20-30 times, white bags cost from 1 to 2.5 rubles;
There are more seeds in white bags, their weight is 1-2 grams, while in color bags 0.5 grams;
Disadvantages:
On white sachets there are scarce characteristics of the variety, there is no infographics and an image of the plant;
If the package is on its reverse side, you cannot see what is in it. The name is only on one side. This is important when sowing if the hands are, for example, dirty or damp;
Purely aesthetically pleasing white bags lose, although this is the most insignificant point. It doesn't matter, it's rubbish, so what's the difference - it's beautiful or not.
The most important issue is quality
As I said, the quality of seeds in a beautiful package can be disgusting. Therefore, I always buy seeds, including in white packages. I don’t take carrots, parsley, dill, beets in color. Why spend money on something that can get, practically, for nothing. Beets and carrots sprout beautifully, grow beautiful and even. Dill, radish, parsley - they sprout well and grow quickly. Peas are very good.
I bought asters last season in white bags. We got up, the seedlings were strong and bloomed - gorgeous. But these are not cheap flowers. I bought them for 2 rubles.
So take the time to bend over and see what seeds are in the white bags. Buy them for little money and give them a try.
